This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. Personnel: Jamie Foxx (vocals); Mary J. Blige (vocals); Common, Kanye West, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, The Game, Twista (rap vocals). Jamie Foxx's second release as a solo artist is his first since his Oscar-winning portrayal of Ray Charles in the 2004 film RAY. It is natural, then, that UNPREDICTABLE would be a much higher-profile affair than 1994's PEEP THIS. The production credits include top-currency names like Timbaland and Sean Garrett. And guest stars? Forget about it. Common, Ludacris, Twista, Snoop Dogg, and Mary J. Blige, just to name a few, make appearances and help boost Foxx's credibility as one of the most popular kids on the block. Foxx's music falls firmly into the category of sultry, hip-hop-inflected R&B a la R. Kelly. And like Kels, Foxx too has a penchant for bedroom themes, as UNPREDICTABLE pulses with the rhythm of sex. His study of Ray Charles's bluesy, elastic vocal style holds him in good stead, though: Foxx has an authoritative delivery on both uptempo grooves ("Warm Bed") and slinky slow jams ("VIP"). While not exactly groundbreaking, the album--with its superior production, excellent guest spots, and Foxx's impressive performances--still comes off a winner. When Jamie Foxx released his first album in 1994, he was a star on In Living Color with a decent-sized following who declared, "No, really, he can sing -- he's alright!" A decade later, Foxx was a major movie star who had impressed Clive Davis enough to be offered a new recording deal. Though he didn't release any albums during the intervening years, Foxx was determined to stay active in music and collaborated with Adina Howard, Gladys Knight, and Melvin Riley. He appeared on the Any Given Sunday soundtrack, made a minor breakthrough on Twista and Kanye West's "Slow Jamz," and then became a superstar with his portrayal of Ray Charles in Ray. Just when it seemed like he'd spend the remainder of his recording career as a Ray Charles impressionist, he put together Unpredictable, his second solo album. Now packing major clout as a recording artist, Foxx received big-name production help from Mike City, Timbaland, and Sean Garrett, along with guest spots from Twista, West, the Game, Ludacris, Common, Snoop Dogg, and Mary J. Blige. Though he fits somewhere between R. Kelly and Ginuwine, Foxx has more than enough personality and talent to defend his music against accusations of opportunism. He can belt and proclaim with authority, but he's best when he's smooth and mellow -- an asset, to be sure, since not many modern R&B vocalists trade in subtleties. Lyrically, Foxx is not subtle -- he's a freak who at least balances the crude ("Make you turn around and touch your toes/The next thing, girl, you already know") with the silly ("I know you're used to dinner and a movie/Why not be my dinner while makin' a movie?"). Unpredictable is actually predictable in that all but one of its tracks have something -- or a lot -- to do with baby making. Foxx drops the salaciousness near the end and proves that he can do teary eyed adult contemporary with as much ease as the bedroom material. ~ Andy Kellman

NO FLASH IN THE PAN Jamie seems to be in it for the long haul and is good at all things he puts his mind to --- the t.v. shows, the comedy, the movies and now the music. But those of us who have been following him were just wondering when he was going to drop a CD. THIS IS IT. It is a keeper. Holla at your boy. It's good. It's real good. Cole had a hand in the writing of just about every track, ...

| | Juelz Santana What The Game's Been Missing CD (2005) With DVD; Limited Edition; Deluxe Edition
Unpredictable
$14.89 With the swift wit and relaxed swagger that marked his many guest appearances for Cam'Ron, Harlem rapper Juelz Santana quickly established himself as the one to watch in that rapper's Dipset crew. After a solid, if uneven 2003 solo debut, Santana delivered on the hype with his second release, 2005's WHAT THE GAME'S BEEN MISSING. A remarkably versatile MC, Santana can paint a desperate, vivid picture of growing up in the concrete jungle ("Rumble Young Man Rumble") or unleash tremendous fire as ...

| | Silkk The Shocker Based On A True Story CD (2004)
Unpredictable
$9.49 Personnel: Silkk the Shocker; Petey Pablo, Curren$y, Master P, Pop , Germany, Motor Bike Mike. Recording information: Shocker House. Photographer: Christian Lantry. There are two interesting things about Silkk the Shocker's fifth album, and that's more than usual. One is that it's been three years since his last album and he's grown when it comes to rapping. It's not by leaps and bounds, since he's still more a party chanter than a lyric dart thrower, but he pauses and asks questions and that's a relief from his old thug spitting. The second is how old-school No Limit the album is, recalling the label's heyday even with its slick recognition of Lil Jon's domination of the South, 2004. In its mix with Petey Pablo guesting, "We Like Them Girls" is the slamming, Lil Jon-inspired single and a solid jam for a weekend roll on 24s. The excellent Southern boot to the head "Playa Playa" is the album's other great track, ending a tight run of tunes with one speed bump. The creeping "Got It on Lock" with woop-woop synths segues into the ominous "We Don't Dance We Bounce" and the funkier "Just Do It" with great care, but when the Petey Pablo-less mix of "We Like Them Girls" follows five tracks after the single mix, you've got to wonder why the album gives up on the great flow. Producer Myke Diesel takes the Lil Jon sound to the underground on his many cuts and XL grabs the same bit of Spandau Ballet's "True" that P.M. Dawn did for the nice breather "Be There." If these sound like great strides to get some aboveground attention, Silkk's constant lyrical venom will keep him off the radio. It's good to hear the little bits of this new, questioning Silkk -- but his anger wrestles with his skills and comes out the winner more times than not, making the album lose its punch on repeated listens. Based on a True Story recalls the good (underground and hard) and the bad (sleazy and cheap) of the old No Limit and displays a bit of growth for the rapper. The slow rate at which he's developing is barely worth watching for outsiders, but the thugs understand and can trip on this for one summer, maybe two. ~ David Jeffries When New Orleans label No Limit first hit the big time in the late 1990s, it was Silkk the Shocker who ...
