On June 1, 2001, a crowd of 9,000 gathered at the Carpenter's Home Church in Lakeland, FL. Drawn by the desire to experience a live worship service lead by singer, songwriter, and Grammy Award winner Michael W. Smith, little did the participants know the grandeur of the night's event. For it was not the presence of Smith, or even choir members such as Amy Grant and Chris Rice, who served as the evening's focus, but the presence of God. Captured on audio, the service comprises Smith's 15th album, Worship, the first of which is purely praise and worship related. The September 2001 Reunion Records release features 11 songs recorded live during the event, joined by two studio bonus tracks. Musically, the project is consistent with Smith's well-loved style. It is upbeat, pop-oriented and includes his trademark piano talents. Opening with the reading of Psalm 57:7, 9-11 by Smith's daughters Emily and Anna, the album features popular worship songs including "The Heart of Worship" and "Draw Me Close." Perhaps the most powerful and moving portion of the project is the sequence of songs beginning with "Above All," a song he performed at the 54th Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service, followed by Marie Barnett's "Breathe" and the intense cry of "Let It Rain." Definitely Smith's best album as of 2001, Worship sets itself apart from the onslaught of praise and worship projects released within the CCM market between the years of 1998 and 2001. It is truly an expression of deep desire and hunger for a greater outpouring of God's presence and power. ~ Ashleigh Kittle
While Michael W. Smith has made his name in Christian music as a singer-songwriter possessed of prolific abilities, WORSHIP finds him putting down his pen for a moment to sing the songs of others. There's been so much activity in the worship music scene, so many songs written, that even a respected auteur like Smith recognized the need to document some of the more affecting tunes in one place. He does so here with the help of some luminaries from the Christian music world, including Amy Grant and a host of others. The music is a mix of smooth balladry, upbeat pop-rock with an occasional hint of U2's wide-screen epic feel, and gospel-flavored s

Certain artists were born to perform praise & worship; Michael W. Smith is one of those. Offering his second consecutive worship disc in a row, Smith has assembled a collection of songs that take the listener on a spiritual journey. Veering away from some of the more traditional praise & worship songs, Smith shines on cuts like "Lord Have Mercy" and "I Can Hear Your Voice" while the more well-known numbers like "Step by Step" ...

On their 2006 debut for the Columbia label, Men of Standard, formerly a quartet, streamlined down to the trio of Isaac Carree, Bryan Pierce, and Lowell Pye. Clearly these changes suit the gospel group well, as SURROUNDED is an assured set of faith-based, R&B-influenced songs that expertly showcases the threesome's stirring vocal harmonies (see the beat-driven "Power" and the gentle title track). Capping off the album is "Latter Rain," a smooth number that features Kirk Franklin, and embodies the ensemble's appealing contemporary gospel sound.
Surrounded marked the beginning of a new era for contemporary gospel group Men of Standard. In terms of associations, the disc also marked their transition from foursome to threesome -- former member Michael Bacon parted ways in 2005 -- and their shift from Malaco's Music Shoals label to Columbia Records. More importantly, ...

Lionel Richie Coming Home CD  (2006)

Worship
CD $10.39  4.3 stars Audio Samples
Lionel Richie's career since his superstar heyday in the early 1980s has been spotty, marked by long silences and lackluster releases. The year 2006's aptly titled COMING HOME finds Richie delivering the one-two punch of uptempo commercial dance-pop and the sentimental love ballads for which he's known. Interestingly, Richie sounds less like an adult-contemporary artist on COMING HOME than ever before, thanks in large part to producer Antonio "L.A." Reid, and high-profile beatmakers like Jermaine Dupri and Raphael Saadiq. The results are surprisingly au courant (check the island-infused club track "Up All Night"), with dashes of new jack swing, hip-hop, and neo-soul, but Richie's old magic with a melody still takes center stage.
Lionel Richie's eighth studio album as a solo artist is led by "I Call It Love," a lightly buoyant and bittersweet single produced by Swedish hitmakers Stargate, the same team that helped boost Ne-Yo's In My Own Words. It's an ideal match, one that should've been made more than once. Too much of Coming Home is merely pleasant -- particularly the adult contemporary fare, with the exception of "I ...

Lest We Forget: The Best Of
Marilyn Manson Lest We Forget: The Best Of CD  (2004) Import

Worship
CD $23.29
A compilation of all the songs that have made Marilyn Manson one of th most excitinig million selling rock stars of this generation. The album comes packed with huge Manson hits from the early cover of "Sweet Dreams" and "The Beautiful People" right through to "Fight Song", "Disposable Teens", "The Dope Show", "Tainted Love" and "Mobscene". U.K. edition adds two extra songs.
It's rather ironic that Marilyn Manson, an artist who kept the idea of the concept album alive during the '90s, turns out to have a greater impact as a singles artist, as the 17-track hits compilation Lest We Forget: The Best of Marilyn Manson illustrates. While each of his post-Portrait of an American Family LPs were designed to be heard as a whole, their singles unfailingly distilled the attitude and ideas behind the individual albums to their catchy core. Yes, catchy -- at his best, Marilyn Manson had a knack for a heavy, glammy hook, the kind that's hard to get out of your head, no matter how hard you try. Not every single had a great hook -- "Tourniquet" is a moody dirge, indicative of what awaits a listener on the album tracks -- but the best of them did, whether it was "Lunchbox" from the debut, the delirious "The Beautiful People," the glam-stomp of "The Dope Show," or the Faith No More homage "mOBSCENE." All these are here, but Lest We Forget doesn't have all the hits -- charting singles "I Don't Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me)" and "Rock Is Dead" are conspicuously missing, as are video hits like "Dope Hat," "Man That You Fear," and "Coma White." These omissions are curious, considering that album tracks and covers are used as substitutions. Nevertheless, it has enough of the hits to make this worthwhile for the casual fans, as well as those listeners who never wanted to admit that these late-'90s alt-rock radio staples were guilty pleasures. [Lest We Forget was also released as a limited-edition set, featuring a bonus DVD containing all the music videos Manson released during the '90s.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
There couldn't be a more fitting title for this collection of gruesome grooves by modern rock's most paradoxical artist; it implies the cataclysm of a national tragedy, and still completely understates the impact this band has had in shaping the face of popular music. How could anyone forget the self-proclaimed "Antichrist Superstar" and his macabre circus? Once a Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) protege, the visually intense Marilyn Manson quickly eclipsed his mentor with releases that peered beneath the facade of American life, revealing a seedy, grotesque, and often disturbing reality.
Considering that Marilyn Manson never pandered to the Top 40 set, LEST WE FORGET can't rightfully be dubbed a greatest-hits record; it serves more as a reminder of the man and his group's 10-year blitz of ghoulish, gory, industrial rock. Manson was always a fan of satire, and covers of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" and "Tainted Love" offer sinister ...

Recording information: Motor Studios; Orange Whip Studios; The Crank Lab.
Billed by frontman Joey Cape (also of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes and Lagwagon) as the final Bad Astronaut album, TWELVE SMALL STEPS, ONE GIANT DISAPPOINTMENT is a bittersweet affair recorded both before and after the 2005 suicide of drummer Derrick Plourde. Given that Bad Astronaut was already Cape's outlet for more serious-minded music, the aforementioned tragedy lends the record even more gravitas, as revealed on the surging, emotive "Autocare."
Bad Astronaut orbited around the nexus of Lagwagon/Me First & the Gimme Gimmes' Joey Cape and the former band's ex-drummer Derrick Plourde. Blasting off from a studio project launch pad the pair rocketed into a bigger galaxy of musician friends. Swiftly growing into a seven-strong crew, the Astronauts released two albums early in new millennium, with their third stuck on the drawing board for years. Now that set has finally landed; and with Plourde's tragic suicide, this album will be the band's and his epitaph. The set was nowhere near completion at the time of Plourde's death, leaving Cape in the difficult situation of tossing what was done or sallying on. He chose the latter, and not surprisingly the drummer's shadow falls across nearly every song on Twelve Small Steps, One Giant Disappointment, most hauntingly on "One Giant Disappointment," which directly addresses Plourde's death. Some of the songs predated this loss, but there's not one that doesn't ache with melancholy, and lyrically there's not an upbeat number on the set. A clutch ...
