Pepper Adams was one of the greatest jazz baritone saxophonists of all time. During a time when Gerry Mulligan's cool-toned baritone was very influential, Adams rose to prominence with a harder and bigger sound, much more hard bop than cool. This relatively obscure release, originally an LP for the World Pacific label, finds the baritonist in Los Angeles matching his hard-driving style with several players identified with West Coast cool jazz. Trumpeter Lee Katzman, who is on every selection but "Blackout Blues" and "Four Funky People," has a tone closer to Chet Baker than to Donald Byrd, but fits in well with Adams. The rhythm section is mostly laid-back and quiet but swinging. A joy of this CD reissue is the repertoire, which contains catchy originals by Adams, Barry Harris (the memorable "High Step"), Tommy Flanagan, and Thad Jones in addition to a lone standard in "Alone Together." Adams was one of the most consistent of all jazzmen; he never seemed to make an unworthy record, so he is in typically fine form throughout this freewheeling hard bop set. "Four Funky People," not originally on the LP but from the same sessions, is included as a bonus cut. ~ Scott Yanow

Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) 5 stars

5 stars A good find
There was not much recorded by Pepper Adams as headliner in the fifties, this is a good find. Typical Adams-bop showed lots of promise for his blossoming career.

5 stars Outstanding
I love the tone Pepper Adams gets on the baritone. Warm and gruff at the same time. And his facility on the big instrument is astounding. Lee Katzman makes a great front line partner here. Recommended--there's simply not enough Pepper Adams out there, so this reissue is particularly welcome.

5 stars Must for Pepper Fans
This recordings, which dates from 1957, has some great blowing from Pepper and some great solos from Jimmy Rowles. But an added benefit was the trumpet work of Lee Katzman. Never heard of him before but he impressed. If you've got other Pepper discs, this is a big plus for your collection. If you don't, it's a great way to start with one of the best baritonists ever.

Being a former teenage rock journalist, Cameron Crowe has made no secret of his love of pop and rock music, or the inspiration he derives from it. He's one of the few film directors who places pop music at the center of his films, littering his pictures with references to rock & roll, even at times where it may not be necessary -- witness how Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz inexplicably morph into the cover of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan in Vanilla Sky. Such a conscientious eye for detail does usually result in cohesive soundtracks, and the soundtrack for his 2005 film Elizabethtown is indeed cohesive. Appropriate for a film set in Kentucky, the record is heavy on sincere, introspective Americana and alt-country, peppered by a few relatively obscure tracks from classic rockers like Tom Petty and Elton John, whose Tumbleweed Connection cut "My Father's Gone" is one of the two best things here. It's languid and atmospheric but effectively epic and melancholy, and even if Bernie Taupin's lyrics don't tell a straightforward narrative, they give the impression that they do. Elsewhere, the album is tasteful, earnest, and well intentioned, although the songs generally take the clearest, safest paths to their end destinations. Nevertheless, it must be said that Crowe maintains a consistent mood for this record -- even more than he did on Jerry Maguire or Vanilla Sky. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
