Swedish rock-revivalists Union Carbide Productions blend dirgy Stooges-style riffage with touches of swirling '60s psychedelia and full-tilt rock boogie on their second full-length, FINANCIALLY DISSATISFIED PHILOSOPHICALLY TRYING, originally released in 1989. Though the band's influences are obvious, they're lovingly rendered with both reverence and a sense of humor, as the funky free-jazz-inspired "Swedish Meatball Revival," the tongue-in-cheek "San Francisco Boogie," and the straight-ahead rocker "Maximum Dogbreath" prove.

| | Olivia Newton-John Come On Over CD (1976)
Financially Dissatisfied, Philosophically Trying
$5.55 Olivia Newton John's Come on Over is country tunes, folk ballads, and more. Her own arrangement and adaptation of the traditional "Greensleeves" is exquisite, haunting, and shows Newton-John is more than just a pretty face. Her hit catalog was already nine songs deep, and "Come on Over" was the tenth of close to 30 visits to the Top 40 in a 14-year period. Fred Rose's "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" and a cover of Dolly Parton's classic "Jolene" open and shut side one with the country side of things while the Diane Berglund/Jim Phillips composition "Pony Ride" is more of a piano ballad, nicely bridging the Western music with the song which would go to the top of the adult contemporary charts, the brilliant title track written by Barry Gibb and Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees. "Come on Over" came right on the heels of one of the Bee Gees' most brilliant compositions, "Fanny (Be Tender With My Love)," charting just three months ...

| | Julia Fordham That's Life CD (2004) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan
Financially Dissatisfied, Philosophically Trying
$38.59 A husky-vocied English chanteuse, Julia Fodham's smokey take on jazz is represented over 11 tracks on this 2004 album, which includes the songs "Sugar" and "Walking on the Water."
Concrete Love, issued in 2002 for Vanguard, was a watermark for singer/songwriter Julia Fordham. Full of elegance and texture, the album paired her with producer Larry Klein. They had worked together once before on 1989's Porcelain. Concrete Love once more showcased the juxtaposition of Klein's graceful subtlety and Fordham's poignancy. The duo returns on That's Life, and it's a worthy successor to Concrete Love. Fordham's songs are always sharp and cutting in their honesty, but they are never sophomoric. Here, with collaborators including Billy Preston, Dean Parks, Greg Leisz, Jamie Muhoberac, David Ricketts, Vinnie Colaiuta, Joey Waronker, and others (in addition to Klein himself), Fordham takes a tough, square look at the phases and stages of life and love; her songs gaze into the murky depths of a person engulfed in observing the tender, edgy web of everyday life in the interior. Her protagonists encounter desire, vulnerability, ambivalence, passion, willingness, fear, and frustration, and express ...

$24.69 | | Grateful Dead Built To Last CD (1989) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Digipak
Financially Dissatisfied, Philosophically Trying
$16.15 Much of BUILT TO LAST reflects the kinder, gentler Grateful Dead of the band's final years, from the cheerful sound of "Foolish Heart" to the uncharacteristically blunt environmental plea "We Can Run." In sharp contrast in tone and approach is Bob Weir's aggressive confrontation of drug addiction in the ragged "Victim Or the Crime," a song that actually benefits from the soft pedaling of the rest of the album.
Jerry Garcia's weary and endearing vocals on the comfortable-sounding tune "Built to Last" and the even more affecting "Standing on the Moon" move this album closer to the heart of the Grateful Dead aesthetic. "Picasso Moon" features the kind of instrumental derring-do that one expects from this fearlessly improvisational group. On the other hand, "I Will Take You Home," a saccharine piece of work from keyboardist Brent Mydland and songwriter John Barlow, ends the album on a strange note. Maybe it suffers for not having the distinctive chattering of Garcia's guitar playing, which makes nearly everything on the album worth listening to.
Supposedly, the Grateful Dead had broken their studio jinx with In the Dark and finally learned how to make good albums without an audience in front of them. So why was this follow-up such a letdown? Perhaps because they hadn't taken seven years to write and perfect new material as they had with their previous album. The dominant songwriter here was keyboard player Brent Mydland (who died the following year), while the crucial songwriting team of Garcia and Robert Hunter ...
