Remember Let's Active? Shortly after Mitch Easter first gained buzz as the hot producer of the new jangle pop South courtesy of R.E.M.'s first three albums, the diminutive producer's own band, the resolutely adorable Let's Active, got its own I.R.S. Records contract, whereupon Easter released three albums and an EP featuring his peculiarly airy, winsome vocal style. Mitch Easter was, at the time, the only singer on the college rock scene who could make his old songwriting partner Chris Stamey sound gruff. And the little-known Florida-based singer/songwriter Kevin K is an absolute vocal dead ringer for him. Unlike Easter, however, Kevin K has little time for twee, jangly pop tunes: his backing band, a trio of French punques called the Real Kool Kats, favor ripping 1970s-style punk, like a rockabilly-fired Gallic Ramones. ("Hey Is Dee Dee Home?" makes the connection clear, as does the rather more on the nose "I Want Some Drugs.") As a result, there's an odd but appealing tension to Perfect Sin, between the sweetness and light of Kevin K's vocal style and the punky darkness of the tunes. It's a bracing combination overall, and any album that finishes with a cover of "Secret Agent Man" immediately has strong points in its favor. ~ Stewart Mason

NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. What set the Pogues apart from any number of other energetic Irish traditional bands was the sheer physical force of their performances, the punky swagger of their personalities, and Shane MacGowan's considerable gifts as a songwriter. Unfortunately, none of these qualities comes through very clearly on their first album, Red Roses for Me. While the Pogues are in good form here, the production (by Stan Brennan) is thin and lacks the body or nuance to capture the finer details of the performances, robbing this recording of the fire the group would display on their later albums. And it's clear that MacGowan had not yet fully matured as a songwriter; there are a handful of superb songs here, such as "Transmetropolitan," "Streams of Whiskey," and "Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go," but some of the others suggest MacGowan was still learning how to fit all his ideas into his songs. Red Roses for Me is good and rowdy fun, but on Rum Sodomy & the Lash and If I Should Fall from Grace with God, the Pogues would prove they were capable of a lot more than that. ~ Mark Deming
