| | Clyde McPhatter Mercury Sessions CD (1996)
Made In Miami music CDs
$10.69 The title is a sort of catch-all, and a misnomer, as this CD doesn't even attempt to represent a cross-section of McPhatter's work on Mercury Records -- but the CD itself is golden. Eleven of the 14 tracks are taken from McPhatter's 1964 vintage Live at the Apollo album, and show him in surprisingly good form, backed by a band that's just a little bigger than it probably needed to have been. None of that detracts from his performances on numbers ranging across his entire career, including "A Lover's Question," "Ta Ta," "Baby Baby," "Such a Night," "Lucille," and "Just to Hold My Hand." Some of this is done in a bit too much of a big-band style, especially "Such a Night," and those arrangements ...
| | Ambrosia CD (1975) Remastered
Made In Miami songs
$5.95 Although they would become better known for smooth AOR ballads like "How Much I Feel," Ambrosia first made their name with this album of progressive rock with a pop music twist. Its songs skillfully blend strong melodic hooks and smooth vocal harmonies with music of an almost symphonic density. Good examples of this crossbreeding are "Drink of Water," which sounds like the Beach Boys tackling a Pink Floyd space rock epic, and "Nice, Nice, Very Nice," which utilizes a combination of stately close-harmony vocals and dynamic instrumental breaks to put forth a clever lyric derived from a Kurt Vonnegut novel. The complexity of the music is further highlighted by its crystal-clear sonic landscape, mixed by Alan Parsons, which highlights unique touches like the use of a Russian balalaika ...
| | Sekou Sundiata Longstoryshort CD (2000)
Made In Miami album
$13.39 Before there was Run-D.M.C., before Grandmaster Flash, before Afrika Bambaataa, rap's true infancy existed with a few black radicals like the Watts Prophets and Gil Scott Heron. For artists such as these, flow, beats, or danceability didn't matter as much as the message did. They were political poets who were more effective with a musical background. Sekou Sundiata picks up this torch and carries it on, years after rap has gone the way of MTV, dance clubs, and innocuous million sellers. The latest prodigy of ...

| | Sola Rosa Moves On CD (2007) (Import)
Made In Miami music CDs
$19.29 Sola Rosa – Moves OnSame Captain, New CrewMission control, Auckland, New Zealand and six years after lift-off, and Andrew Spraggon’s Sola Rosa project “Moves On”. The title of this latest CD is an explicit statement rooted in the reinforcement and of the Sola Rosa experience. It’s all about a bigger, more human sound achieved by the recruitment of a full band for both the recording and touring of “Moves On”. No more flying solo, at least, for now.Your Crew MembersAs tight as the proverbial drum, the Sola Rosa band members are all highly-experienced in their individual fields, and those of Dimmer, of Trinity Roots, of Chè Fu, of Nathan Haines, of Fat Freddy’s Drop, of Anika Moa, of King Kapisi … get the picture?Drummer Will Scott and bassist Matt Short keep the beat neat and sweet and the groove forever smooth. Guitarist Ned Ngatae is a king of musical understatement. He’s been a participant at the New York-based Red Bull Music Academy and DJs as Killamanraro (aka Nedsta). He’s also been a 2004 APRA Silver Scroll nominee as a part of Dimmer. Moving and shaking, percussionist supreme, John Highsted is surrounded by thee most happening selection of congas and bongos, gourds and guiros. With Special Guests And Ground StaffAiding and abetting Moves On you’ll find a top shelf of brothers and sisters. Number One Squire for Hire, Nathan Haines, drops in while Manuel Bundy scratches his way across a tune or three. The International Observer himself, Mr. Tom Bailey, steps in for a bit of co-production and also makes up a third of a downright fearsome keyboard team along with Steph Brown (also of The Krates) and the gifted Elia Gaitau (formerly with King Kapisi). While Tom and Steph are getting funky and righteous on the Fender Rhodes, the remaining wealth of analogue keys (synthesizer, organ, piano and clavinet) are coaxed into life by Elia. And finally, punctuating the offbeats, and we’ve got the living brass of Kim Patterson, Scott Towers & Fat Freddy’s Drop trombonist, Joe Lindsay.Featured vocalist on “Badman” is former Sindecut and Jah Wobble sideman, Spikey Tee. Good company on account of his contributions to Bomb The Bass, Mannasseh, Mr. Scruff, Tony D, Morcheeba, and Marcus Intalex. He’s also a guest on Mark Rae’s debut ...
