BLOOD ALLEY: William Wellman's BLOOD ALLEY begins with the inhabitants of a local Chinese village liberating a political prisoner, Captain Tom Wilder (John Wayne). The oppressed villagers are disillusioned by communism's stranglehold and want the former merchant marine to sail their ship through the Formosa Straits--the infamously treacherous Blood Alley--to Hong Kong and freedom. Wilder agrees, and heads off down the Yangtze aboard an old steamer, with Cathy Granger (Lauren Bacall) along for the ride. The strong arm of the plot is taken from the novel by Aaron Sidney Fleischman. Widescreen CinemaScope provides effective shots of the panoramic scenery, and it is an absolute delight to watch Wayne and Bacall, so reminiscent of Bogie and Hepburn in THE AFRICAN QUEEN.
THE SEA CHASE: A renegade German freighter captain has both the British and German navies in hot pursuit when he embarks from Australia on a trip across the Pacific as WWII breaks out. To make matters worse, the globetrotting woman he takes on as a passenger has the crew in a lather. "Powder your nose, Baby, we're coming into Hong Kong!" John Wayne, joined by fellow screen icon Lauren Bacall, braves dangerous waters and pursuing soldiers as he steers Chinese refugees to freedom's shore in Blood Alley. William A. Wellman (The Story of G.I. Joe) directs. Another femme movie legend - Lana Turner - teams with Wayne in the search-and-destroy adventure The Sea Chase, directed by John Farrow (The Big Clock). Wayne plays naval officer Karl Ehrlich, renegade commander of a German freighter trapped in perilous circumstances at the outbreak of World War II. Catch him if you can!

$9.69 DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK is John Ford's first film in Technicolor (which recently perfected far richer shadings of color than had previously been possible), and the director uses it to stunning effect. The film stars Henry Fonda as Revolutionary War-era farmer Gilbert Martin, who, in 1776, has returned with his well-born wife, Lana (Claudette Colbert), to his rustic cabin in the increasingly dangerous Mohawk River valley. At first unaccustomed to the harsh physical challenges of frontier life, Lana adjusts to the work at hand and is soon able to help her husband in the fields. Shortly after they learn that the colonies are at war with the British, their farmhouse is attacked and burned to the ground by a party of Tory-led Indians. The feisty Widow McKlennar (Edna May Oliver) provides temporary ...

$8.85 Two World War II-themed films are combined on this collection.
BATAAN: A group of doomed Americans and Filipinos hold a bridge against invading Japanese. Supposedly based on a true incident, over-the-top patriotism made it a Hollywood blockbuster of the war era, despite a pretty fake-looking jungle. Avoid the colorized version.
BACK TO BATAAN: In BACK TO BATAAN, John Wayne plays Colonel Joe Madden, a rough tough officer serving under General MacArthur during the Second World War. When American forces are forced to pull out of Bataan, Madden volunteers to stay behind and organize the Filipino residents into a top flight guerilla force that will keep the Japanese on edge until MacArthur's promised return. There's some romance amid the suspense and sweaty action ...

However, Martin Garth (Howard Da Silva), a treacherous supplier of illegal arms to the Indians, has other plans for Abby and manages to rebuy her with the worst of intentions. Abby becomes an indentured servant for Garth, toiling bravely ...

Blood Alley/The Sea Chase review
$7.79 OUT TO SEA: Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are reunited in this hysterically funny high seas romantic adventure. Gambler and con artist Charlie (Walter Matthau) is desperate to meet single, rich ladies with large bank accounts. When he persuades his lonely widower brother-in-law, Herb (Jack Lemmon), into accompanying him on a pleasure cruise, he neglects to mention that they will be working as dance hosts and masquerading as wealthy bachelors. Much to Herb's chagrin, their accommodations are in the bowels of the high-class ship, and they are forced to work for hilariously tyrannical cruise director Gil Godwyn ...
