(3 Customer Reviews)
An album that got a fantastic "Seu Jorge". 14 tracks which brings together the best of its style, such as "Rebelde de Rebelde" and "Starman".
Audio Mixer: Stewart Lerman. Author: David Bowie. Director: Desirée Craig Ramos. Editor: Stewart Lerman. Possibly the best thing about Wes Anderson's sea-faring dramedy THE LIFE AQUATIC was the appearance of singer Seu Jorge. Jorge plays a character in the film who lounges about the ship, playing an acoustic guitar and singing David Bowie songs in Portuguese. THE LIFE AQUATIC STUDIO SESSIONS is an album of Jorge's performances for the film. His beautifully textured voice and quietly strummed acoustic lend a new charm to Bowie classics like "Life on Mars?" and "Changes," and make for an irresistible listening experience for fans of Brazilian music, the film, Bowie, and just about everyone else. Raised in the slums of Rio, Brazil, singer/songwriter Seu Jorge used his formidable talent and undeniable charm to great effect in director Wes Anderson's seafaring comedy the Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou as a guitar strumming deckhand. The catch was that Pelé dos Santos only knew how to play Portuguese versions of David Bowie tunes, all 13 of which are featured on Hollywood's Life Aquatic Studio Sessions. Jorge possesses a voice that exudes the same regional comfort as fellow countrymen Milton Nascimento and Caetano Veloso, and his warm and loose guitar playing matches his timbre, resulting in a batch of covers that retain the original framing of the Bowie classics, while injecting a sunny island sweetness into their very core. While the very idea reeks of kitsch, the end product is surprisingly poignant and agreeable. Even the Thin White Duke himself seems taken with the idea, as he states in Aquatic's liner notes that "Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs acoustically in Portuguese I would never had heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with." ~ James Christopher MongerUncut (p.111) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[O]n 'Five Years', 'Quicksand' and a forlorn 'Lady Stardust' he quivers sincerely on the verge of a favela-folk-tinged rock'n'roll suicide." | | Monochrome Set Eligible Bachelors CD (1982) (Import) United Kingdom
Life Aquatic Studio Sessions
$17.09 One of the classic, undiscovered albums of the early '80s, Eligible Bachelors is a tour de force of wit and musical imagination. It features some of the funniest songs ever committed to vinyl, kicking off with "Jet Set Junta," which, alongside bookend song "The Ruling Class," pillories the neuroses of the wealthy. "The Mating Game" is also deeply amusing as a cad's cynical guide to the opposite sex, with lyrics like, "Blond, brunette or redhead, black, yellow or white/They taste the same, ...
| | Dawn Of The Dickies CD (1979) (Import) United Kingdom
Life Aquatic Studio Sessions
$17.39 Released in 1979, the second album by Los Angeles punks the Dickies turns up the silliness that permeated their debut, but also brings in a stronger set of tunes catchy enough to match the enjoyably goofy lyrics. There's also only one cover version this time, a deliberately painful disemboweling of the Moody Blues' uber-pretentious "Nights In White Satin." Highlights include "Fan Mail" and the giddy horror-movie parody "Attack of the Mole Men." The 2000 CD edition adds two single-only bonus tracks, "Gigantor" and "Bowling With Bedrock Barney." The Dickies march ...

British pop singer Morley is expertly balanced between Feist's modern take on the singer-songwriter tradition and the U.K. neo-R&B explosion typified by Amy Winehouse, Duffy, and Adele. Possessing a smoky, attractive voice that at times recalls Joan Armatrading, Morley favors low-key grooves over vocal histrionics or aggressive hooks, but the craft of tracks like "Places I've Never Been" and "Somebody New" is undeniable. Seen, the third album from New York singer/songwriter Morley, is one of those rare cases where familiar elements -- contemporary folk-soul and jazz, Americana, adult pop and rock -- are far more than their genres suggest. While her previous records had elements of what is on display here, they didn't come close to this wealth. Produced by Jay Newland and Jean-Philippe Allard, and co-produced by the artist, the set features 14 songs either written or co-written by Morley. Her list of collaborators includes former Bob Dylan sideman Larry Campbell on guitars and pedal steel, bassist Fred Cash, guitarist Robin Macatangay, and drummers Shawn Pelton and Rocky Bryant to name a few, and her guest list includes guitarist Leni Stern, saxophonist Peter Apfelbaum, bassist Richard Bona, and accordionist Gil Goldstein. But Morley's gifts are merely underscored by her partners here; it's her songs that hold the real depth of her gift. There ...
