Studio orchestra leader Billy Vaughn may have been even more popular in Germany in the 1950s and '60s than he was in the U.S., which helps explain why the most comprehensive compilation of his work originates there. This two-CD, 50-track album of original Dot Records recordings contains 20 of Vaughn's 28 Billboard Hot 100 chart entries, including the major U.S. hits "Melody of Love," "The Shifting Whispering Sands," "Sail Along Silvery Moon" and "Raunchy." Recorded in 1994 at his own theater in Branson, Missouri (the subject of the wryly amusing anti-Nashville screed "Mansion in Branson"), this live set features Glen Campbell and an excellent band running through a sort of career retrospective. The emphasis is on his pop hits than on strictly country material, although "Kentucky Means Paradise" doesn't exactly protest the smell of cow manure, which is a good thing.
Campbell's voice has deepened a bit since his '70s heyday, but he's in otherwise fine form here and seems to be enjoying himself, particularly on a flashy cover of Mason Williams' "Classical Gas." There's also a nice duet with his daughter Debbie on the Everly Brothers' "Let it Be Me."
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
