| | Rolling Stones Still Life (American Concert 1981) CD (1982) Reissue; Remastered
Martha Wainwright
$7.96 By the early '80s, the Rolling Stones were one of the last remaining groups leftover from the original "British Invasion" two decades prior. One of the main reasons for this was the Stones' ability to keep pace with the musical climate of the time, without losing any of their original blues-sleaze. Their 1982 live set (fourth overall) STILL LIFE, was taken from performances from their hugely successful U.S. tour a year before, when Mick, Keith and company headlined the biggest outdoor stadiums and vast arenas.
Although it lacks the youthful and unpredictable energy of their earlier concert albums (namely 1970's GET YER YA YA'S OUT), STILL LIFE showed that the Stones still had plenty of gas left in their tank 20 years down the road. Highlights include a cover of the Miracles' "Going to a Go Go" (an early MTV favorite), such '60s classics as ...

| | Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention Roxy & Elsewhere CD (1974) Remastered
Martha Wainwright
$8.15 Pricipally recorded live at The Roxy, Hollywood, California from December 10-12, 1973; the Auditorium Theater, Chicago, Illinois in 1974; Edinboro State College, Edinboro, Pennsylvania on May 8, 1974.
It's no secret that one of the most powerful weapons in Zappa's arsenal was his sense of humor, which was at its height in live performance. Consequently, there's no better way to get a feel for the full scope of Zappa's music than on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE. This set finds Frank at his mid-'70s peak, working with Ruth Underwood, Don Preston, George Duke, etc. While all the tunes are technically impeccable (often featuring trademark feats of counter-intuitive derring-do), it's Zappa's humorous interaction with the band and the audience that puts the real spark into this recording.
Delivering lengthy monologues both inbetween and during the songs, Zappa provides light-hearted contrast to the mulit-textured, typically sophisticated arrangements. For every "Son of Orange County" (an ambitious, difficult piece) there's a "Cheepnis" (wherein he details his fondness for cheesy horror films) or "Be-Bop Tango," where he brings audience members onstage to dance. Ever the perfectionist, Zappa ...
| | Ouba A1 Freak Out Total CD (1968)
Martha Wainwright
$11.59 More than anything psychedelic (or North American, for that matter) from the era, Ouba sounds like something off the German Krautrock scene, perhaps Can without the structural discipline or the wealth of ideas. The lack of discipline is, more than anything, a matter of the recording's genesis. A1 Freak Out Total, as the title alone implies, was an off-the-cuff, in-studio, freak-out jam, a vamp on certain riffs and (especially) rhythms to which the music frequently returns like organizational motifs, rather than anything remotely resembling songs. On top of that, the four culprits -- all friends and outstanding instrumentalists but all members of different combos on the Quebec, Montreal rock scene -- were admittedly stoned on various illicit substances when the music was set down. The resulting clamor was recorded straight-through, live, and with no editing, overdubs, or extraneous mixing. Although there are two tracks on the record, it is really just two halves of a single freeform studio experiment, not really even meant for outside ears. But although there are quite a number of meandering, nonsensical, or plain painful-to-hear moments throughout said jam, there are also a good many amazing, isolated sections, especially when superb drummer Andy Shorter and guitarist Michael Pagliaro hit upon a funky groove like something off Tago Mago or Ege Bamyasi. Electronic artists could have a field day extracting excellent samples from this music (especially on the rhythmic end). As a pure listening experience, however, it's somewhat less a holy grail. Still, with only a couple extant copies floating around, the original LP is one of the most ridiculously rare Canadian psych pressings. And although it is certainly not worth mortgaging the house over, fans of rare or obscure acid rock should find the ...
| | Pebbles Vol. 7: Chicago Part 2 CD (1994)
Martha Wainwright
$12.65 Subtitled - Chicago 2. The second of the Chicago area-related Pebbles compilations, drawn from various Pebbles High Times & other compilations. 23 tracks of original '60s punk & psych classics. AIP. 1994.
Due to mastering error, tracks on the CD differ from the listing on the tray card: The Cryan Shames' Ben Franklin's Almanac is listed on the tray card but is not on the CD. The Boyz' Come With Me is not listed on the tray card but is on the CD.
The second volume of Pebbles that is devoted to Chicago is similar to its predecessor, Pebbles, Vol. 6. It includes an early recording by the Ides of March, who later changed their sound and scored a big hit with "Vehicle"; a track by Gary & the Knight Lites, who later became the American Breed; and numerous selections from obscure '60s garage bands with some connections to the Windy City. While some of these bands may have been influenced by Chicago blues, they seem to have been more influenced by the British Invasion, Bob Dylan, other '60s garage bands, and '50s rock & roll; indeed, the album features remakes of songs by the Who ("I Can't Explain"), the Rolling Stones ("The Spider & the Fly"), the Animals ("I'm Gonna Change" and "I'm Cryin'"), the New Colony Six ("At the River's Edge"), the Vectors ("It's Been a Day or Two"), the Hombres ("Let It All Hang Out"), and ...
