| | Z-Ro Cocaine CD (2009)
In The Mid-Nite Hour music CDs
$15.05 Despite his status as one of hip-hop's most prolific artists, Z-Ro never quite spreads himself too thin. The provocatively titled COCAINE is his second release from 2009, and features his trademark self-aware, yet rapier-sharp lyrics over some of the hotter beats out of the fertile Houston scene. The Intro skilfully sets out the landscape as the dark-vocaled MC reflects upon his choice of a life of street dealing without a shred of remorse, while stressing his decision was not exactly the wise one. From there, Z-Ro, an expert storyteller, wanders from tale to tale, each one delivered with a novelist's touch, on a record which somehow transcends cookie-cutter.
In 2009, Z-Ro's loyal fan base expected Heroin, a two-CD set announced the previous year, but instead they got Cocaine, a one-CD version with many songs that already appeared on the mixtape Codeine. Confusing, ...

| | Tom Joyner's Old School Mix CD (1999)
In The Mid-Nite Hour CD music
$8.89 Around 1994, urban contemporary DJ Tom Joyner hired Steve "Silk" Hurley to provide "old school mixes" for his popular Tom Joyner Morning Show; and by old school, he meant the classic soul, funk, and disco of the late '70s and early '80s. To be sure, Hurley was perfect for the job; he had played an indispensable role in house music, and his credentials as a mixmaster were undeniable. The type of mixing that Hurley has done on his show is what he does for Old School Mix, which spans 1976-1982 and boasts a non-stop mix of 18 major hits from that period. One gem segues right into another; just as Gwen McCrae's "Funky Sensation" is starting to fade out, Hurley comes right in with One Way's "Cutie Pie." And just as Peter Brown's "Dance With Me" is starting to end, Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell" makes its presence felt. The CD is full of gems that defined the disco era, such as Chic's "Le Freak," Sister Sledge's "He's the Greatest Dancer," and Foxy's "Get Off." But Joyner's mix has as much to do with hardcore funk and soul as it does with disco; Funkadelic's "One Nation Under a Groove," Slave's "Slide," and Zapp's "More Bounce to the Ounce" soared to number one or two on the R&B charts, but didn't fare nearly as well on the pop charts. In fact, Old School Mix is pretty much the type of soul/funk/disco blend ...
| | Augustus Pablo Dub, Reggae & Roots From The Melodica King CD (2000)
In The Mid-Nite Hour music CDs
$9.99 With Shanachie records maintaining a catalog of classic Augustus Pablo titles like King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown and King David Melody, and the release of Island's Classic Rockers, this collection from lesser-known label Ocho seems likely to fall through the cracks. Indeed, a title like Dub, Reggae & Roots From the Melodica King may seem unlikely to shed new light on an already renowned Jamaican producer. Yet what may first appear to be another attempt to repackage Pablo's music to capitalize on the uninitiated is in fact a fantastic collection of some of his best early material. While there is a small degree of overlap with previous releases, many of the cuts offered are decidedly more difficult to track down. Great care has been taken with the running order as dubs or alternate mixes typically follow more familiar versions. So Jacob Miller's "Baby I Love You So" is given a superb melodica reading on "Cassava Piece," and the guitars of "Give Praise" slip, slide, and get submerged under water on "Silent Satta." In the hands of lesser producers, listeners would be forced to scour the results in search of insignificant variations. On The Melodica King, however, there are the likes of both Lee Perry and King Tubby at the controls, in addition to Pablo himself. Perry's contributions include a haunting revisitation of Pablo's "Java" rhythm ("Dub Ethiopia") and the outstanding and oddly understated "Black Ants Lane." As for Tubby, his mix of "Black Gunn" (led by Pablo's ringing xylophone) is the most wonderfully bizarre ...

| | Porter Whiskey Hill CD (2002)
In The Mid-Nite Hour album
$10.65 If you listen, you can hear the sound of drums coming from somewhere high up on Whiskey Hill. And if you listen more closely you might hear the haunting whisper of the ngoni's seven strings, and the faint wail of a distorted guitar. Perhaps even a violin or the tapping of a balafon. And if you try, you might discover magical songs, in all of their simple complexity, with carefully crafted lyrics, and soulful harmony. And then you might notice a rock and roll snarl, and a funky groove that is bending you at the knees and moving your foot up and down. You have just heard the first sounds of Porter, and have only just begun. Founded by songwriter Peter Fand in the year 2000, Porter is the next step in the fusion of musical worlds, under the grand heading of rock and roll. Stylistically it is often compared to Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell in the way that Fand crafts a poetic lyrical tale, and in the unique and compelling way that Porter introduces sounds that are rarely heard in American popular music. It is classic American songwriting, infused with the flavor of West Africa, the easeful intensity of jazz and finished off with a bit of America's distinctly southern country twang. Among the most compelling elements of this music is the deeply rhythmic approach that Porter brings to their arrangements. The dynamic sound of two percussionists working together ...
