Prison album
$9.59 The delirious "Intro" sets the stage for what's to come: murky synth washes are gently led into the sunshine by the sudden magisterial arrival of the flamenco guitar. The title track is a rousing instrumental that fuses techno with samplings of the Irish traditional ballad, "She Moved through the Fair" (referred to as "Belfast Child"), with a haunting vocal over a mix of percussion elements, ...

Prison CD music
$14.89 The debut album by the High Kings was issued by the same folks who had a hand in Celtic Woman and Riverdance, and consists of easy listening and buffed-and-polished Irish folk music of appeal to an audience that is comparatively massive for the world music fringe: this album made the lower levels of the Billboard Top 200 album chart. The High Kings is glossy and polite -- targeted perhaps toward listeners who enjoyed the pennywhistle on Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" -- even on tunes that strive to be upbeat and frolicsome. ~ Stewart Mason
The debut album by the High Kings, brought to you by the same folks who had a hand in faux-Celtic abominations like Celtic Woman and Riverdance, brings up an important philosophical question: just exactly what is the demographic for this blend of middlebrow easy listening and buffed-and-polished Irish folk music? More to the point, what does that audience (which was comparatively massive for the world music fringe: this album actually made the lower depths of the Billboard Top 200 album chart) get out of the antiseptic gloss of The High Kings that isn't available to them through the equally cleaned-up and mainstream likes of, say, the Chieftains ...

| | Fabulous Wailers CD (1959)
Prison album
$12.59 As any quick perusal of old Top 40 rock & roll station playlists will attest, singles were where the shakin' action was, as rock & roll albums were scarce as hen's teeth back in those pre-Beatle days. But when the record companies decided to issue one, it was usually an artifact of high rockin' value and some major influence. Naysayers to the contrary, this debut album by the Northwest's first great rock & roll combo is just such an artifact. The Wailers dispensed crude, greasy, largely instrumental rock & roll music for those who came to shake it up and shake it down, and it's all on fine, rhythmic, open display here. This album is amazing in its own simplistic, nuthin'-special way, its crudity almost palpable. There's only one vocal aboard, Kent Morrill's "Dirty Robber," later covered and torched by the Sonics. Everything else is built on the riff-sturdy bones of their biggest hit, "Tall Cool One." With two guitars, piano, sax, and drums -- no bass player anywhere on here, another crudeness indicator of the times and locale it was recorded in -- all blasting away like they're working a VFW Hall dance, hoof shakers like "Wailin'," "Shanghaied," "Beat Guitar" (featured in the soundtrack of the misguided Jerry Lee Lewis bioflick Great ...
| | Hanggai Introducing CD (2008)
Prison CD music
$9.75 It's not what you'd expect -- a group from Beijing, mostly comprised of Mongolians, playing horsehair spike fiddles and two-string lutes, with Central Asian overtone signing -- and sounding at times remarkably like the Velvet Underground. But that's exactly what this six-piece manages, thanks in part to the droning, monotone quality of many of the songs and the touches of programming and guitar from Western producers Robin Haller and Matteo Scumaci. What they bring is evident in the first few cuts of the disc, as on "Five Heroes" and "Flowers." It's subtle, but highly effective, and the fact that the band uses Western-style chord changes ...

| | Steve Freund I'll Be Your Mule CD (2001)
Prison songs
$13.29 It is quite appropriate that one of Steve Freund's albums is titled "C" for Chicago. Although the singer/guitarist is a native New Yorker and presently lives in San Francisco, Chicago blues is his specialty. Freund used to live in the Windy City, where he was employed by heavyweights like Sunnyland Slim and Koko Taylor -- and it was where he recorded I'll Be Your Mule in 2000. This CD was produced by guitarist Dave Specter, a bluesman with strong jazz leanings. Specter (who also produced "C" for Chicago) definitely knows his jazz; he could spend hours telling you about the contributions of Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk. And because some (though certainly not all) parts of I'll Be Your Mule are jazz-influenced, Specter was the perfect producer for this CD. Freund is especially jazz-minded on B.B. King's "Fine Lookin' Woman," Big Bill Broonzy's "Ramblin' Bill," and the instrumental "Bill Reed's Blues." And yet, he isn't a Jimmy Witherspoon type of artist, or a disciple of Jimmy Rushing and Joe Williams. Freund is an electric Chicago-style bluesman whose roots are Chess Records, James Cotton, Buddy Guy, etc. But that doesn't mean that Freund (who wrote or co-wrote seven of the CD's 13 tracks) can't have some non-Chicago influences. Having a Chicago blues orientation doesn't mean that he can't be influenced by Texas blues (including Albert Collins) or incorporate jazz elements occasionally. Freund doesn't have a ...

| | Ian Carr Change Is CD (1969) (Import) United Kingdom
Prison CD music
$16.29 The British jazz quintet led by Ian Carr and Don Rendell recorded this album in 1969, and it has been unavailable for years.
This re-release on the BGO label is completely remastered and comes with voluminous liner notes from Ian Carr and jazz writer Alyn Shipton.
Change Is, is the final album by the Don Rendell/Ian Carr quintet, a small Brit jazz group that took the country by storm and was well received in Europe and in limited circles in the United States. The band developed a unique sound that came out of hard bop and moved through many different phases, developing a unique musical language before they reached the mountain top of creative expression with this final album. Trumpeter Ian Carr, of course went on to form Nucleus, and enjoyed continued high-profile success. Saxophonist Rendell took a lower key approach but continues to contribute to the growth of British jazz with numerous projects as a leader and as a sideman. Other players here include pianist and composer Michael Garrick, drummer Trevor Tomkins, and bassist Dave Green. Guests on this set include African percussionist Guy Warren, saxophonist Stan Robinson, bassist Jeff Clyne, and pianist Mike Pyne. The six selections on Change Is run the gamut. The album opens with "Elastic Dreams," featuring all manner of Warren's percussive imagination. Green bows his bass as Clyne plucks his, and the band enters slowly, following both mode and melody by coloring phrases before breaking into a low-key, swinging, funky kind ...

| | Beyond Pluto BP EP CD (2007)
Prison album
$7.49 The BP EP is the debut CD from its colorful creators Too Juicy and Faint Acquaintance in their group Beyond Pluto. In 2005 the duo formed the idea of a hip hop group that would expose the genre for what it is and everything it could be. Over the next couple years the two spent their time earning degrees in psychology and business while applying their intellect towards the music. Their goal was to think outside the corporate and mental state of the world and present music that goes beyond the typical. This CD accurately portrays their personalities and the thoughts that lie behind all minds.Listen as the two take you on a journey to speak out for what they believe in and hold nothing back. The BP EP tackles subject-matter such as judgmental thinking in “Bottle Rockets,” hip hop stereotypes, the ups and downs of karma as the two reverse roles in “Karma is a Boomerang,” ...
