Alive album
$13.29 While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened by the posthumous release of ALONE IN IZ WORLD, compiled from various recording session outtakes.
While one might expect a big, deep sound to emanate from a gargantuan-sized body like that of Iz, the hefty singer actually possessed a gorgeous, fragile tenor voice full of tenderness and delicacy. That voice is put to use here on tunes that alternate between voice-and-ukelele ...
| | Best Of The Guess Who CD (1971) Bonus Tracks
Alive CD music
$6.79 The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening "These Eyes," with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel to the classic AOR crunge of "American Woman," the Guess Who played a wide variety of music. It is sometimes hard to believe that the same group that brought the world the jazzy "Undun" and the CS&N-ish hippie anthem "Share the Land" is also responsible ...
| | Dead Can Dance Aion CD (1990) Reissue; Special Edition
Alive music CDs
$11.99 The music of Dead Can Dance has long been a favorite of the "Goth" crowd; however, AION is really the first one of the band's records that can actually be called Gothic in the classic, renaissance sense. Arguably Dead Can Dance's most successful record, it contains the band's most consistent set of songs since SPLEEN AND IDEAL. Widening their view to encompass more of the ancient world than with earlier records, Dead Can Dance explore styles from Northern Europe ("The Song of the Sibyl") to the Middle East ("Radharc"), with stops along the way at a number of other surprising locations.
The fact that it is based on a 16th-century Catalan chant notwithstanding, portions of "The Song of the Sibyl" are eerily reminiscent of the experimental ...

| | Eek-A-Mouse U-Neek CD (1991)
Alive CD music
$9.15 In the 1980s, Eek-A-Mouse (a quirky, eccentric toaster/singer) made significant contributions to dubwise, which evolved into the more abrasive dancehall style associated with Shabba Ranks, Nardo Ranks and Lt. Stitchie. Essentially, toasters like Mouse are reggae's equivalent of rappers, although dub was around long before ...

| | Abie Toiber Lotus CD (2005)
Alive album
$15.95 What Toiber has done with Lotus is create a musical atmosphere, which he hopes will take the listener to the edges of the Universe and back again. You will have to buy this CD to have its message revealed and gain the Enlighten. The tunes make compulsive listening. All the songs are very much rock and they most certainly do rock. The styles travel through a diversity of zone of psychedelia from Indy Pop throught to realy heavy Space Rock. All this is woven around layers of ambient sonics, rich velvety synthesisers, pulsating drum both from the kit and the electronic arsenal. "Lotus" is an album that mixes the frontiers between musical genres. Rock guitar, electronic programming, real drums, synthesizers, elements of the music from the seventees. This album is a top rate recording. Lotus has an astonishing ...
| | Byrds Definitive Collection (Gold Disc) CD (1995) (Import) Import
Alive CD music
$19.69 The problem with assembling a collection that tells the story of the Byrds and still contains their best songs is that by the end, when only Roger McGuinn was left from the original lineup, the band was simply a whole lot less interesting than it was at the beginning. To tell the group's story correctly -- to be definitive -- means including songs like "America's Great National Pastime" from the winding-down era of the Byrds, at the expense of including much better earlier material like Gene Clark's "She Don't Care About Time." True, this anthology has the group's biggest hits, and even some songs that weren't hits but should have been, like David Crosby's gorgeous "Lady Friend," but it also includes several tracks from the band's uninspired end run, which makes the sequence feel like it loses air as it goes on, until the tire is left totally flat. Good history, but not necessarily a good listening experience. ...
