| | Jennifer Knapp Way I Am CD (2001)
Behind The Musik album
$12.19 THE WAY I AM was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Gospel Album.
Those among you who may have been waiting in anxious anticipation for a Christian rock equivalent to Melissa Etheridge may breathe a deep sigh of relief thanks to the appearance of Jennifer Knapp and the success of THE WAY I AM. Knapp's mixture of folk-rock, AOR, widescreen power ballads, and straight-ahead pop-rock proves endlessly adaptable to her Christian lyrical themes. Thundering beats and strident guitars don't hamper Knapp's faith-based message. That doesn't mean you have to be in tune with the message to enjoy the music. Knapp is so skillful at executing her style that even those who often avoid Christian rock will be able to enjoy it. Those who choose to tune in to the lyrics will find a complex take on the subject enlivened by an energetic production ...
| | Ephat Mujuru Journey Of The Spirit CD (2002)
Behind The Musik CD music
$9.45 The mbira, or thumb piano, is more than an instrument for the people of Zimbabwe. In the right hands, it becomes an instrument of the spirit and the heart. And the late Ephat Mujuru definitely had the right hands. On Journey of the Spirit, his music weaves hypnotic patterns that entrance while his voice intones over it, in his native Shona or in English, accompanied for the most part by simple percussion. It's a winning formula with deep beauty, ...

Verve's Boy Meets Girl: Sammy Davis, Jr. & Carmen McRae on Decca documents the two late-'50s records featuring duets between Sammy Davis, Jr. and Carmen McRae. 1958's Boy Meets Girl has both singers on all the tracks, while 1959's Porgy and Bess is Sammy's show all the way as McRae is on only a couple of songs. Boy Meets Girl is the more pleasurable of the two albums as the duo tackles some of the best tunes big-time writers like Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, and Jerome Kern had to offer, classics like "You're the Top," "Cheek to Cheek," "A Fine Romance," and "Two Sleepy People." Swinging easily throughout, they sound like two pals who are having the time of ...

| | John Lewis Afternoon In Paris CD (1958)
Behind The Musik album
$9.95 Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus, New York, New York).
It was in Paris that John Lewis co-led this 1956 date with Sacha Distel, a French guitarist who never became well-known in the U.S. but commanded a lot of respect in French jazz circles. The same can be said about the other French players employed on Afternoon in Paris -- neither tenor saxophonist Barney Wilen nor bassist Pierre Michelot were huge names in the U.S., although both were well-known in European jazz circles. With Lewis on piano, Distel on guitar, Wilen on tenor, Michelot or Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke or Connie Kay on drums, the part-American, part-French group of improvisers provides an above-average bop album that ranges from "Willow Weep for Me," "All The Things ...
| | Karl Sharicz Rough Draft CD (2007)
Behind The Musik CD music
$8.69 Singer-songwriter and Massachusetts native Karl Sharicz introduces his debut CD Rough Draft, as the name implies, out of early and rough attempts at songwriting and recording. All of the instruments on this disc, guitars; bass; drums; and vocals, were performed by Karl who is joined on track #6 by friend and former musical partner, Melissa Beth Klayton. Desperately Seeking Susan, Mining the Hurt, and Something I Can't Hide sound more like pure demos done in a single take, but the rest of the tracks are either polished home studio productions or live recordings all of which offer great sound quality. These songs were recorded on a small inexpensive digital 8-track by Karl himself except track #6 which was recorded live by Melville Park Studios at Boston's legendary Club Passim where the likes of Joan Baez and Bob Dylan performed during the 60s. Karl performs ...
