Here's a little-known glam-metal fact: Phil Lewis was not the first frontman for Sunset Strip favorites L.A. Guns. There were actually a few others who fronted the band before Lewis (Axl Rose was rumored to be an early member), one of whom was a gentleman named Paul Black. The Black-led version of L.A. Guns (which also included Tracii Guns and Mick Cripps, two members who would later appear on the group's recordings with Lewis) managed to demo quite a bit of material during their short tenure together, which serves as the basis for 2005's Black List. As expected, these '80s-era demos are not exactly up to snuff sonically with the eventual studio albums by the group, but for hardcore fans, there are a few areas of interest. Tops on the list would be early versions of a pair of tracks that would later turn up on the group's self-titled 1988 debut, "Show No Mercy" and "One More Reason to Die," while the rest of the tracks never appeared on any L.A. Guns releases. As evidenced by such tracks as "Love and Hate," Black's vocals were reminiscent at times to those of W.A.S.P.'s Blackie Lawless, while the album-opening "Stranded in L.A." shows that the group was harder edged than the local competition at the time (Poison, Warrant, etc.). ~ Greg Prato

THIS L.A. GUNS CD ROCKS This L.A. GUNS cd is GREAT !!! I'm use to Philip Lewis on lead vocals , but Paul Black's vocals really KICK A** also. I would love it if Tracii got back into the band and Paul Black and Phil Lewis could both front the band the would REALLY ROCK !!!!!!!!! great release! I've had most of these demo songs on a bootleg tape for years, and have always liked them. People hate on Paul Black for no reason, this CD is great. Most of these songs are really cool, and a lot of them ended up on later LA Guns albums with re-written lyrics. If you're a "Phil Lewis fan" then maybe you should steer clear as he was not the band's singer yet at the time, but if you're a "LA Guns fan" this is a great testament of how LA Guns started and a really cool CD of old demos to have. I'm Sold I've been a long time fan of L.A. Guns since the first two records but have always wondered why they have never put out anything as good since their early days. Upon hearing about this release by original vocalist Paul Black, I had to get it. Although I was a little sceptical about how it might sound, I was too curious to pass it up. Now, I'm Sold. This is by far the best record I have bought in a long time. I can't stop playing it. And although I was already a fan with Phil Lewis singing I have to say without a doubt. "This should have been the first record!" and in a way it is. It just came out 20 years late. Paul Blacks raspy voice fits the music and the lyrics are a lot more dark and poetic. The booklet and pictures that come with the album tell the story of their starting days with Paul Black .This guy was made for Rock n Roll. If you were ever a fan of L.A. Guns you must have this record. And even if if you weren't a fan, this album will make you one. Submitted by Julie (Phoenix, Arizona, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
INTERESTING RELEASE ? If you've always liked this band, then this is worth the money. There are different versions of some of L.A.Guns early stuff here before Phil Lewis rerecorded the vocals for what would become the self titled debut from the band. The original versions are good and they do hold up against the Phil Lewis renditions. Also, there is a great version of Winters Fool here as well as many other gems. I have to say that this release is much better than some of the other similar releases from both L.A. Guns and other bands who release early recordings.
