Vocalist/rapper Rawsun and his younger brother Don Juan Cartel grew up around reggae, but this album has little to do with that form of music. Their late father, Jahsun, fronted the American reggae band Strictly Roots. When their father died, the brothers took up the mantle, with Rawsun (aka Rason Jahmal) taking over vocals where his father left off. The group enjoyed great success with their traditional reggae/dancehall sound in Hawaii, but by 2001, Rawsun and his keyboardist-producer brother were looking to incorporate the more modern influences of hip-hop and R&B into their sound. This led to a parting of ways with their older bandmates and to the years of studio work that culminated in Rated R. This album is hard-edged, party themed hip-hop with speedy, Jamaican patois rapping. There's not much unique about Rated R, which (with songs like "Get High" and "Life Ain't Easy") primarily falls back on clichéd hip-hop gestures. There is the rare pleasant surprise, however, such as the appealingly Bollywood lilts to "Doin' It." Otherwise, the disc is packed with fairly prototypical nods to sexual prowess, partying, and the hard life of the ghetto, with some strong beats and production flourishes. ~ Erik Hage

$16.39 Born and raised in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, Jeff began playing trumpet at the age of twelve. Jeff’s move to jazz trumpeter began by accident, and was born out of a failed attempt at guitar lessons as a small boy. Private trumpet lessons evolved into hard work recognized, and an eventual invitation to study at the prestigious University of Miami School of Music. Jeff honed his considerable talents in various Florida hotspots. On stage, Jeff has worked with notable musicians, some of which include Tom Braxton, Marilyn McCoo, Julie Andrews, Bob Hope, Harry Connick, Sr, The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and Dave Brubeck. Jeff’s most recent mentor was trumpet legend Leon Merian. One of the things that Jeff prides himself on is not being the kind of trumpeter who can only play one type of music. He cut his teeth on big band music. Even still today Jeff is in great demand by big bands as a lead player as well as soloist. Recently, Jeff spent two years as a member of the Leon Merian big band as featured soloist. The band mainly performed at Bongo’s nightclub in Bradenton, Florida and was featured in the international Jazz Times magazine. “ The place was always packed. So much so, that the owner booked the band indefinitely.” Jeff has played in a variety of musical groups from pop, blues, jazz, and classical. Jeff played with the Syncats, a rat-pack style group at the Soaring Eagle Casino in Detroit. The group was the featured entertainment for the 2004 New Years Eve gala celebration. Jeff’s true love is playing in small jazz groups. “I love the freedom to express myself and be creative in a small combo. This past Labor Day I was invited to play with Ghalib Ghallab at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. While ...
