In the year 2000, you'd be well within your rights to assume there's little new ground to be broken by a guitar-bass-drums rock band. Admittedly, you'd probably be right; Lifehouse doesn't break any astonishing new ground or pioneer any new trends. That's not what this pop-rock trio is about. They're more concerning with crafting solid songs and arresting arrangements than being the Next Big Thing. Fortunately, their songcraft has proven solid enough to earn them a solid following.
The group has clearly learned some lessons from the post-Nirvana school of alt-rock. They handily combine melodic, understated moments with emphatic sonic outbursts. Moody keyboards and delicate acoustic guitar walk hand in hand with hardy power chords and hard-hitting rhythms. Simple but effective melodic hooks keep the listener's attention focused on both the personal, ruminative lyrics and the pop-friendly production.

A comprehensive budget compilation by the dependable JSP label, the five-disc 1927-1934 fully covers the first seven years of the Carter Family's musical career and features recordings that are the basis of the trio's honored place in the country music firmament. The set starts, appropriately enough, with the Carters' six contributions to Ralph Peer's legendary 1927 recording sessions in Bristol, Tennessee, and then chronologically wades through every released side that A.P., Sara, and Maybelle recorded for RCA Victor. Barely surviving the ravages of time, The New York Dolls managed to reconvene for a spectacular comeback show in 2004. Original members David Johansen, Arthur "Killer" Kane, and Sylvain Sylvain were aided by a few auxiliary members for this show, although in true Dolls form the performance was laced with tragedy as Kane passed away shortly afterwards. Ex-Smiths singer Morrissey invited them to play at an event he was curating in London, and the surviving members decided to bite the bullet and take to the stage. The results perfectly demonstrated how the band have been such a huge influence on a wide variety of performers, with Johansen and co. tearing up the stage with a youthful vigor that belies their real ages. Among the tracks performed were "Looking For A Kiss," "Trash," "Another Piece of my Heart," and of course "Personality Crisis."
