The second installment in Lloyd "Bullwackies" Barnes' series of instrumental dub albums contains dub mixes of rhythms voiced elsewhere by such singers as Max Romeo, Barrington Spence, and Junior Delahaye. Delahaye contributes drums, keyboards, and drum machine programming on these tracks, and the bass parts are played by Leroy Sibbles, leader of the legendary Heptones. Sibbles, in fact, brings several Heptones compositions with him -- "Gonna Fight Dub" is a cut of "Fight It to the Top," and "Sea of Dub" is a dub version of the classic "Sea of Love." These mixes are, unfortunately, almost completely without vocals. The exception is a great version of Horace Andy's "Lonely Woman," rendered here as "Lonely Dub," which includes a few shreds of his fine singing. But as instrumental dub goes, this is top-notch stuff; Barnes was in top form as a producer during this period, and the flavors of his studio creations are rich and varied, though deeply rooted in the traditional values of golden-era reggae. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

African Roots Act 2 album
$20.89 Released just six months after CATCH A FIRE, BURNIN' is the equal of its predecessor in its musical focus and passion, yet it contains--arguably--an even better batch of songs. Leaner, tighter, and simultaneously more hard-hitting and more hook-oriented than the songs on CATCH A FIRE, the set list here dazzles. Two tracks in particular, the inspirational civil rights anthem "Get Up, Stand Up" and the story-song "I ...

Nobody who likes music could fail to be emotionally moved by this album, and not just because Marley is no longer with us. It was a special live treat before he died. The great thing about this record is the feeling that this is what it was like every night, unlike other live recordings which capture one or two gigs of a tour. Marley was extra special and a giant of popular music. Wallow in this vital record and listen to a man who had something to say and yet had fun while he said it. Most of the tracks you would want to be on the record are here, including the definitive version of 'No Woman No Cry' and a funky 'Lively Up Yourself'.
As the title implies, this is indeed Bob Marley & the Wailers captured in performance at the Lyceum Ballroom in London during the final U.K. leg of the Natty Dread tour. Passionate and symbiotic energies constantly cycle between the band and audience, the net result of which is one of the most memorable concert ...

African Roots Act 2 songs
$17.69 Elastic Bond fully delivers a sound that has been churning through Miami's dance floors, waistlines and stereos for almost two years now. Here, bottom-heavy, grooving beats are shot through with punchy horn lines, tied up in snaking guitar trills, caressed with sultry soulful vocal, clever lyrics, and scattershot rhymes that inject positive boosts to their listeners. It all makes for music that grinds, thumps and ultimately shimmers and glistens like cooled-but-still-sticky sweat, the kind you had to earn. It's Latin, it's dub, and although it's baked in the sun, it's big beat chillout chilled way out, over and through. More than anything else however, it's Miami. Elastic Bond started out as a medium for Venezuelan producer Andrés Ponce to experiment and create a unique sonic cocktail. The name of the project suggests the idea of eclectic sounds and musical ...
