| | Ultimate 16: Ultimate 80'S Rock CD
Ultimate 80's Rock doesn't avoid filler as well as some of the titles in this budget-line series from Warner. But while a set list including two songs each from Night Ranger and Whitesnake as well as Ugly Kid Joe's "Hate Everything About You" and Extreme's spindly "More Than Words" is a little groan-inducing -- particularly because there are hundreds of better songs in the "'80s rock" canon -- this comp still has some nostalgia value. Or at least some laughs. It's still fun trying to hit Tom Keifer's high notes on Cinderella's "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)," or whistle along with the Scorpions' Berlin Wall meditation "Wind of Change." Besides, Nelson's big closer, "(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection," is proven to be a better song than most will remember. ~ Johnny Loftus Ultimate 16: Ultimate 80'S Rock Music Ultimate 16: Ultimate 80'S Rock Review

Dream Theater's tenth long-player is about as dense and challenging as any album in the band's discography and emphasizes not only the virtuoso members' stupefying musicianship, but also their most aggressive and thoroughly metallic songwriting tendencies. The sixteen-minute opener "A Nightmare to Remember" quickly establishes this agenda via frequently thrash-paced staccato riffing, some of John ...

$12.79 Although Sweden and Norway are the first countries that come to mind when one thinks of Scandinavian metal, Finland has turned out to be an impressive player as well--impressive for black metal, impressive for folk metal, impressive for gothic metal, and impressive for death metal. Insomnium have epitomized the melodic side of Finnish death metal and they continue in that vein on ACROSS THE DARK. This 2009 release isn't a radical ...

Ultimate 16: Ultimate 80'S Rock album
$12.19 Atlanta's Mastodon climbed to the top of the metal heap the old-fashioned way. Taking the template for success etched by Metallica, the band captured the imagination with a series of albums that offered potent heaviness and relentless experimentation. After graduating from respected indie Relapse, they released 2006's acclaimed BLOOD MOUNTAIN, an album with a fire motif/fantasy adventure concept that opened numerous doors both commercially and critically. Their latest, CRACK THE SKYE, completes their elemental cycle ...

$9.69 The only unanswerable question about Melechesh's fourth album, Emissaries, is whether its one of 2006's best black metal albums, or best world metal albums. Yes, conservative world music fans may positively tremble at the thought, but it wouldn't be a stretch to saddle these proponents of "Mesopotamian Metal" with the world metal tag, such is their persistence in incorporating Middle Eastern flavors -- both contemporary and as old as civilization itself -- into their furious metallic onslaught. Steeped in Chaldean mythology from top to bottom, Emissaries is a collection of Sumerian spells and Mesopotamian mysticism ...
