| | Dino: The Essential Dean Martin CD (2004)
Here Comes Buddy Catlett
$10.89 Nearly a decade after Dean Martin's death, the crooner's fans were finally given the definitive Dino collection. While there was already a two-disc summation of Martin's Capitol recordings, as well as several compilations of his Reprise material, the single-disc, 30-track DINO: THE ESSENTIAL DEAN MARTIN contains a generous selection of the best of his work, culling from both labels' vaults. Steubenville, Ohio's favorite son became a singing star in the 1950s, mostly by virtue of his smooth, easy charm, apparent both in his vocal style and his public image. That charm is crystallized here--the South American lilt of "Sway;" the spare, countryish "Memories ...

| | Earl Klugh Heart String CD (1979)
Here Comes Buddy Catlett
$8.85 All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24-bit mapping.
Guitarist Earl Klugh was pioneering "smooth jazz" long before the media had ever given it a name. His highly polished fingerpicking and relaxed grooves were the template by which later artists would create the adult contemporary phenomenon that would forever change the climate of contemporary instrumental music.
His tastefully self-produced HEART STRING is a testament to the guitarist both as a musician and a stylist. Sticking mostly to acoustic and nylon-string guitars, Klugh weaves sparkling melodies and slick, yet brief solos over funky mid-tempo grooves flavored with electric keyboards and dramatic strings. Though jazz purists may frown on Klugh's highly commercial ...

| | LaShell Griffin Free CD (2004)
Here Comes Buddy Catlett
$8.29 LaShell Griffin had been singing in church choirs for two decades before she heard about "Pop Star Challenge." The brainchild of Oprah Winfrey, this feature of her TV program was created in answer to the youth-obsessed aspect of the phenomenon of AMERICAN IDOL. While the songs Griffin performed on Winfrey's show were generally secular (though inspirational) pop, her debut album, a result of her winning the contest, reveals deep roots in gospel. With FREE, Griffin deftly navigates the line between sweet, original soul and songs of devotional faith.
On "Get Away," she unwinds in a neo-soul style comparable to Jill Scott, backed by a funk-driven beat. A few tracks later, Griffin sings a stirring version of the ballad "Man from Galilee" that would do Cissy Houston proud. The two tracks are from opposite sides of the fence, but they match brilliantly on this prismatic record. FREE reaffirms Oprah's knack for unveiling promising talent, and proves that Griffin is much more than just a contest-winner, but a rising force in both the worlds of gospel and soul music.
Winner Of Oprah's Pop Star Challenge 2004
