Night Train is a competent journeyman set of old school-style R&B, mixing covers with Terry Hanck originals. The covers give a good sense of where Hanck is coming from, as he selects songs from the catalogs of Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, Hank Ballard, and Little Willie John. He plays good smoky saxophone in the spirit of Junior Walker, "Junior's Walk" being an obvious homage to that Motown great. As a singer, he's not as good; the vocals are only adequate. With its mix of New Orleans rock & roll, early soul, and some blues, it's very much a record steeped in 1950s and 1960s forms of R&B, though one that keeps the torch burning rather than igniting it with a distinctive creative voice. ~ Richie Unterberger Bluesers, old school soul fans, surfers, skaterheads and lotsa girls are lining up to follow the groove massive of superb singer, sax man and songwriter Terry Hanck. Night Train's twelve impressive tracks (five Hanck originals) revel in core traditions---the classic R&B style of New Orleans (Lee Allen, Fats Domino, Dave Bartholomew, Tommy Ridgeley) and the 1960s electric Chicago blues & soul groove (Junior Walker, Sam Cooke), plus steamy stroll-ballads, a taste of jazzier, big-boned honk and swing, even a juicy swamp pop gem. Rising young guitar star Chris 'Kid' Andersen along with the precision rhythm of Butch Cousins (drums) and long time bassist Michael 'Fly' Brooks are joined by special guests Jimmy Pugh (Robert Cray, Tommy Castro) on Hammond B-3, Sid Morris on piano and Sista Monica Parker on background vocals. Wide demographic appeal will bring this exemplary non-stop platter home! Produced by Chris 'Kid' Andersen & Terry Hanck. Key Selling Points:• Long time fans know Hanck from his tenure with Elvin Bishop from 1977-87. Hanck is special guest on Bishop's 2005 release, Gettin' My Groove Back (Blind Pig)• Night Train is Hanck's third nationally

Night Train album
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, ...

Night Train songs
$9.95 Soul belter J.J. Jackson is best known for his 1967 smash, "But It's Alright," but he has some fine singles and a couple of excellent albums as well, and 1967's But It's Alright on the Calla label is one of them. Kicking off with the infectious title track, the record alternates between ...

| | B B King Mr. Blues/Confessin' The Blues CD (2005) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Night Train CD music
$18.79 This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start for King with the contents taken from three different recording sessions in a 13-month period (March 1, 1962 through April 11, 1963). Based on the results, the artist was being presented as a blues shouter, supported by an antiquated big band and/or orchestra. Arguably the best of the lot comes from the Maxwell Davis led ensemble on the first of several Big ...

| | Roy Buchanan 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection CD (2002)
Night Train album
$7.05 Principally recorded at The Record Plant, New York, New York; The Record Plant, Sausalito, California; Amazing Grace Club, Evanston, Illinois between July 1972 and March 1975. Includes liner notes by Dave Thompson.
This is part of Universal's "20th Century Masters The Millenium Collection" series.
Roy Buchanan's five albums for Polydor, released between 1972 and 1975 and excerpted on this midline-priced best-of, were a worthy compromise between artistic expression and commercial considerations. In the late '60s and early '70s, record companies and music journalists beat the bushes looking for guitar heroes on the scale of Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix and came up with at least a couple, Johnny Winter in Texas and Buchanan in Washington, D.C. Polydor no doubt signed Buchanan hoping it had a Clapton/Hendrix-size star, but he lacked the temperament for the big time and merely fulfilled his contract, though he was then scooped up by Atlantic for another try. The tracks here, a good if brief summary of the Polydor years, illustrate both his strengths and ...
