The Thanksgiving Day EP -- released two days before Thanksgiving Day 2005 -- is a teaser for Ray Davies' forthcoming album, Other People's Lives, which is not only his first proper solo album, but his first collection of new songs in nearly 13 years. Based on this EP, Davies is in fine form and may indeed be on the verge of delivering a full-fledged comeback. The title track is a surprising bit of laid-back Stax soul, spiked with a few of his signature English eccentricities in the form of an over-the-top backing chorus and wry observations. While "Yours Truly Confused N10" has a brass arrangement that's a shade too brassy, it's a clever bit of social satire, and if the moody "London Song" is a bit too splashy and theatrical in its production, Davies' spoken verses are evocative (more so than the exaggerated backing vocals), and the gentle country-rock of "Storyteller" makes up for any of its excesses. "London Song" may prevent Thanksgiving Day from being a flat-out, undeniable success, but the rest of this EP shows Davies regaining his strength as a writer and record-maker. Once it's finished, it's hard not to want to hear more, so this teaser does its job very well indeed. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Thanksgiving Day album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized ...
| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Thanksgiving Day CD music
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S ...
| | Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society CD (1968) (Import) England; Remastered; United Kingdom
Thanksgiving Day music CDs
$25.59 Contains original 15-track mono album as well as 12-track stereo version.
It's easy to imagine the confusion with which this manifesto for the defense of the status quo was received on its release in 1968. The world was in turmoil and the pose of the Street Fighting Man, rebellious and politically aware, was far sexier than the quaint homebody image the Kinks present here. The title track finds Ray Davies proudly declaring himself a preservationist of custard pies, vaudeville, and such comic book characters as Desperate Dan. However, these slices of suburban life have weathered a lot better than most of their contemporaries.

| | Standard Wire Post To Wire CD (2004)
Thanksgiving Day songs
$13.49 The Standard took their time with Wire Post to Wire, the result being an album that's as gorgeously tasteful as it is frighteningly tense. There's something anxious in the pattering rhythm to the Clinic-ish "Even Numbers," and as the guitars rush forth you might expect an explosion. Instead, Jay Clarke's sophisticated piano line takes the fore, matching the fragility in Tim Putnam's wavering vocal. It's a pretty incredible thing to hear, this maturity. After all, aren't these post-everything bands supposed to be chock-full of vim, vigor, spike, and squelch? On the contrary, the Standard revel in fueling their angular (and angry) side with that incredible piano of Putnam's, and a lyrical mystery that's usually unsettling, but occasionally heartbreakingly gorgeous. It's like crying over a foreign film whose language you do not understand. The darker side of Wire has its day in the black sun with "Ghosts for Hire," which stutters and stops in ...
