Thanks to its distinct, downright catchy single "Orinoco Flow," which amusingly referenced both her record-company boss Rob Dickins and co-producer Ross Cullum in the lyrics, Enya's second album Watermark established her as the unexpected queen of gentle, Celtic-tinged new age music. To be sure, her success was as much due to marketing a niche audience in later years equally in love with Yanni and Michael Flatley's Irish dancing, but Enya's rarely given a sense of pandering in her work. She does what she does, just as she did before her fame. (Admittedly, avoiding overblown concerts run constantly on PBS hasn't hurt.) ...

Cold Snap has a stronger R&B direction than Collins's previous Alligator releases, most notably in the presence of a slicker production. That approach doesn't suit him particularly well -- he's at his best when he's just playing the blues, not when he's trying to sing. Nevertheless, he turns out a number of gripping solos, and that is what prevents Cold Snap from being too much of a disappointment. ~ ...

This box set includes three discs that cull from the Chairman's work for Capitol records, including classic recordings of "I've Got You Under My Skin," "Witchcraft," and "Lady is a Tramp."
Short of purchasing the entire EMI/Capitol Frank Sinatra set, it is very hard to argue with this three-disc collection of stone classics from the key years of 1953-1961. There are 51 cuts here, all in pristine remastered sound, with Frank fronting the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. The set might come at a small price premium, but given the extensive liner notes, sequencing, presentation, and wealth of music featured here, it becomes a nearly unbeatable collection against anything in comparable size or price range. Sinatra was at his absolute zenith here, finding not only the chops to match his confidence, but gaining so much ground as an interpreter of ballads. He moved sharply away from the soft crooning style of his days fronting the big bands to something far more emotive, dynamic, and communicative throughout the 1950s and on through the early '70s. This is a great set that can serve as a stellar introduction -- along with a single- or double-disc best-of from the Reprise ...

2006 digitally remastered reissue of the first two albums by the British Glam/Rock superstars on one CD featuring two bonus tracks: 'Wild Winds Are Blowing' and 'Get Down And Get With It'. They were called Ambrose Slade when debut album Beginnings was released in April 1969. It was a mixture of self-penned songs, instrumentals and cover versions. Their second album, 'Play It Loud', was released in November 1970. Slade were knuckling down to write their own material. Noddy Holder's voice was beginning to show its great potential and songs like 'The Shape Of Things To Come' (the record's first single), 'Raven', 'Dapple Rose' and the 'Know Who You Are' offered solid proof that Slade could mix guile with bluster. However, it was a foot-stomping cover version of Bobby Marchan's 'Get Down And Get With It' (included as a bonus track) that provided the group's first chart hit. It reached Number 16 in the UK in the summer of 1971 and its element of crowd participation became a cornerstone of the group's concert set. Slavo.
