| | Daddy Yankee Barrio Fino En Directo CD Daddy Yankee Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Daddy Yankee was one of the leading figures of the reggaeton movement in the mid-2000s, and this dual-disc compilation package is a testament to the Puerto Rican rapper's talent and popularity. BARRIO FINO EN DIRECTO namechecks Daddy Yankee's immensely popular BARRIO FINO album, and several tracks from that album are featured here in live concert versions. Also included on the CD are four new studio cuts, including "Gangsta Zone," with Snoop Dogg, and "Machete Reloaded," with Paul Wall. The presence of these mainstream hip-hop artists shows just how far reggaeton was able to cross over.
On both the live audio tracks and the live footage included on the DVD, it's clear that Daddy Yankee is a first-rate and much-loved performer (his arena-sized audiences sing along with every word). The high-energy music, which draws on dancehall rhythms, hip-hop attitude, and Latin-flavored samples and accents, is as infectious here as on any of Daddy Yankee's releases. Fans won't want to miss this key overview.
The DVD also includes special features like music videos, photos, and behind-the-scenes documentary footage.
This set features a live DVD filmed December 19 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico Jose Miguel Agrelot in Puerto Rico, including behind-the-scenes b-roll, Puerto Rico Day Parade performance, exclusive interviews, and video. The CD includes all the audio from the DVD performance, plus 5 totally new studio tracks and guest stars Snoop Dogg and Paul Wall.Rolling Stone (p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] solid stopgap from reggaeton's biggest star. The live cuts are as exciting as they were on BARRIO FINO..." | | Leona Lewis Echo CD (2009)
Barrio Fino En Directo
$11.18 The goal of Leona Lewis' 2007 debut, Spirit, was to prove that an X Factor winner could be a phenomenon not just in the U.K., but in the rest of the world. The goal of her second album, 2009's Echo, is to prove that success was no fluke, to build upon "Bleeding Love" and turn Lewis into an actual diva. Certainly, Echo in any of its incarnations -- its song listings are tailored for individual markets, with the U.K. getting a cover of Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," while the U.S. gets a second song co-written by Justin Timberlake -- uses the chilly, synthesized "Bleeding Love" as its foundation, creating a sheet of sound equal parts Euro-pop and modern American R&B. As opposed to the often-stuffy Spirit, this is proudly modern, and if the sounds emanating from the two sides of the Atlantic might seem to be aesthetically opposed, they're both producer-driven music constructed layer by layer from rhythm to the vocal, where the overall sound matters more than what's being sung. Which isn't to say that Lewis doesn't sing the hell ...

| | Aretha Franklin 30 Greatest Hits CDs (1985)
Barrio Fino En Directo
$11.15 The title may not be 100-percent accurate, since the songs here are culled from Franklin's soul years, roughly between 1967 and 1974, and she's had lots more hits since then. That nit picked, however, this is a genuine embarrassment of riches, with Aretha's soaring voice and under-appreciated piano decorating one wonderful genre-defining song ("Respect," "Chain of Fools," "Natural Woman," "Since You've Been Gone") after another. The most revelatory cut is probably "I Say a Little Prayer," in which Franklin imbues the song with a spine-tingling gospel flavor without ever losing the pop delicacy of the original Dionne Warwick version. But just about everything else here is essential listening.
This compilation spans ...
| | Radian Chimeric CD (2009)
Barrio Fino En Directo
$12.78 Austrian synth-bass-drums trio Radian has been making austere, arty post-rock (remember when that was a thing?) music since the late '90s. But unlike Tortoise or other, related acts, Radian has never seemed particularly interested in human concepts of beauty. In a way, their stark instrumental tracks recall Autechre more than any ordinary band -- alienation is as much a goal as a consequence of their steadily ...
| | Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde CD (1992)
Barrio Fino En Directo
$13.85 When the Pharcyde burst onto the scene in the summer of '92 with its brilliantly disconnected grab bag BIZARRE RIDE II THE PHARCYDE, it seemed at first an innocuously enjoyable, goofy if somewhat lightweight disc. However, it would swiftly become clear that there were deeper waters stirring within the Pharcyde's rhymes and rhythms, and that the group's style was unlike that of those who came before.
The main distinction came in the Pharcyde's subject matters, which run the gamut from the usual ...
| | Lone Star Ridaz 40 Dayz/40 Nightz CD (2002)
Barrio Fino En Directo
$13.65 Superproducer Happy Perez rounded up the Lone Star Ridaz for another album in late 2001, 40 Dayz/40 Nightz. Released a few months later in early 2002, the album found Perez furthering his already polished production style -- making it even more trademark, more Texas; in other words, putting it on the same artistic level as Timbaland and Dr. Dre, though obviously not nearly as commercially successful. Featured MCs on the album include Grimm, Max Minelli, Merciless, Low G, Baby Beesh, Javi Picasso, Rasheed, South Park Mexican (SPM), Russ Lee, and a special appearance by Fat Joe. Most of the songs on the album will feature two or three of the MCs, along with the occasional vocalist on the hook. In addition, there are two posse songs, both album highlights: "City of Houston" and "Count Your Blessingz" -- the former featuring an interpolation of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under the Bridge" for its hook; the latter a ballad that acknowledges the tragic mood in post-September 11, 2001, America. Another album highlight is "South Park/South Bronx," which teams up SPM and Fat Joe, quite an unlikely pairing that's a pleasant surprise, ...
