After almost 20 years, New Order finally released a compilation that arguably exceeds 1987's SUBSTANCE with 2005's two-disc SINGLES. In terms of the material's breadth, SINGLES easily trounces SUBSTANCE, as it ranges from '81 to '05 and serves as an excellent overview of the famed post-punk/dance act's entire career. While the band's transition from Joy Division gets a slightly shorter shrift ("In a Lonely Place" is one of the few tracks from SUBSTANCE that's notably absent), the second disc is a wonderfully selected sampling of New Order's occasionally maligned later period.

Arranged chronologically, SINGLES moves from the group's first true steps out of Joy Division's shadow (the surging classics "Everything's Gone Green," "Temptation," and "Blue Monday") to jubilant pop glory (the catchy smash "Bizarre Love Triangle," the dance floor anthem "True Faith") and, eventually, to their status as veteran dance-rock heroes (the eminently assured "Regret" and "Crystal"). Although some fans may be perplexed by versions of songs that differ from SUBSTANCE (particularly "Temptation" and "Confusion"), SINGLES is so comprehensive that it should even win over New Order diehards still clinging tightly to their vinyl copies of the lauded former collection.

Now that Waiting for the Sirens' Call has been officially declared part of New Order's history, only eight months after release, it's time once again to reassess the group in the form of a mostly redundant compilation. Rhino calls Singles the group's "first ever career-spanning two-disc retrospective," but it's more like the group's first compilation to contain tracks from Sirens' Call. Besides, 1987's Substance spanned the group's career upon release and remains the basis for most New Order compilations (this one included), so it's no big deal. Just as importantly, over a third of the contents date from 1993 onward; that's too high a percentage to make the set an ideal introduction. Considering its title, Singles has a clear-cut purpose, unlike 2002's International. Then again, each of the 14 tracks contained on International are also here -- what amounts to an inferior version of Substance with some crucial tracks squeezed out in favor of lesser, later singles. A proper sequel to Substance, covering Technique through Sirens' Call, would've made more sense, but the lure in dressing up a combination of oft-recycled classics with slightly varying surroundings has yet to lose its appeal. Substance remains, and will likely always remain, the release to get you started. [London/Rhino's 2005 edition included one bonus track.] ~ Andy Kellman

5 stars A Nice Departure From the Old
Singles is the logical step after the eponymous Substance album in 1987. The Band has produced a recording quite worthy of judicious listening in the face of it's relative nostalgic value. New Order has amassed a fortune in re-released material, but as a long-time, adoring fan, Singles not only does not disappoint, it bestows versions of our favorites that will take us back to when we heard Blue Monday for the first time.

5 stars MUCH better than Substance!
as for a In A Lonely Place, it was excluded because it was a b-side so they didn't mess anything up here. Great collection of singles! The version of Temptation here is SO much better than the one on Substance. To me, NO's always been a singles band anyway so this is the best cd by them for me.

When Jon Anderson rejoined Yes after DRAMA, he was inserting himself into an unusual situation. Keyboardist Geoff Downes and longtime guitarist Steve Howe had left to form Asia with prog rock vets John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music etc.) and Carl Palmer (ELP). Chris Squire and Alan White brought original Yes keysman Tony Kaye back and recruited vibrant young Australian guitarist/vocalist/composer Trevor Rabin. The quartet had already begun writing and recording, but Anderson was able to insert himself into the proceedings with such ease that the new combination sounds completely natural on 90125. Mostly, the band was concerned with trimming the musical fat to keep pace with the onslaught of the 1980s. Thus, tracks like "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and "City of Love" are full of samples, splices and almost funky beats and riffs. The unusual time changes and complex riffs of tunes like "Changes" and "Cinema" leave little doubt that this is still a Yes album, but the band succeeds in giving their sound a ...

Also available in a 3-pack with FACE THE MUSIC and DISCOVERY. 1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version. The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water mark. Jeff Lynne reportedly regards this album and its follow-up, Out of the Blue, as the high points in the band's history. One might be better off ...

Also available in a 3-pack with A NEW WORLD RECORD and DISCOVERY. Master Sound releases are 24-karat gold CDs remastered from first-generation masters. This process utilizes 20-bit technology and Sony's revolutionary "Super Bit Mapping" system. ELO was big enough by 1974 that some people actually suggested that ELDORADO featured Satanic backward-masking. Of course, the idea was ludicrous; but the band playfully responded by adding a backward message to "Fire on High," the opening instrumental on 1975's FACE THE MUSIC. Besides "Fire on High," which was used as background music for countless television programs in the '70s, this album's eight lengthy ...

In some ways, 1973's ON THE THIRD DAY is the first "true" ELO album. Though co-founder Roy Wood had left the band to form the more experimental Wizzard after the first album, his influence was still all over 1972's ELO II, especially on the orchestrated cover of Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven." ON THE THIRD DAY, however, is pure Jeff Lynne, the first album ...

Although many think of Queen foremost as a band that excelled in the recording studio, the group was also an exceptional live band, as the 1979 double disc LIVE KILLERS demonstrates. After years of honing its stage act, Queen had become one of the world's premiere rock concert attractions, featuring elaborate staging and costumes. Recorded during a two-month European tour in support of the JAZZ album, LIVE KILLERS does an excellent job of mixing the hits with the lesser-known songs, and inspired playing by all four members adds an additional element of excitement. LIVE KILLERS ...

Dutch street punk bands seem to exist in some kind of time warp, where the Angelic Upstarts and Sham 69 are the be-all and end-all of punk rock, and the ideals of hoarse, yobbish vocals and riff-driven, rhythmic songs have not yet curdled into the tuneless bark and mindless unison riffing of late-era ...

Poetry On Record: 98 Poets Read Their Work (1888-2006) CDs  (2006)

CD $34.99  Audio Samples
Liner Note Authors: Rebekah Presson Mosby; Al Young. Poetry on Record: 98 Poets Read Their Work 1888-2006, the deluxe, artfully presented box set from Shout Factory, is essentially (though not related to commercially) a new, updated version of In Their Own Voices: A Century of Recorded Poetry released in 1996 by Rhino. Perhaps it's because they were assembled by the same person, Rebekah Presson Mosby, who compiled not only the Rhino anthology, but also Our Souls Have Grown Deep Like the Rivers: Black Poets Read Their Work and, with Elise Paschen, Poetry Speaks, and she writes the extended liner essay here entitled "Our Lives Distilled." This set was introduced -- as was the Rhino anthology -- with a different essay, by poet, educator, and author Al Young. Much of the material on the Rhino set is replicated here. In the case of writers from the 19th century through the early '50s, this is understandable. After all, how many tapes of Walt Whitman, Alfred Lord Tennyson (there has been some deabte as tothe authenticity of these two recordings), and W.B. Yeats can there be? What isn't here is other poets -- poets who haven't had the same work duplicated over and over -- and why, when there is so much else available? Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski, Lawrence Ferlenghetti, e.e. cummings, Etheridge Knight, Charles Simic, Sharon Olds, Rita Dove, and many others included here have plenty of recorded material available, some of it arguably as good as what's here. But, licensing being what it is, who knows. In ...
