| | Rolling Stones Still Life (American Concert 1981) CD (1982) Reissue; Remastered
Idea
$7.96 By the early '80s, the Rolling Stones were one of the last remaining groups leftover from the original "British Invasion" two decades prior. One of the main reasons for this was the Stones' ability to keep pace with the musical climate of the time, without losing any of their original blues-sleaze. Their 1982 live set (fourth overall) STILL LIFE, was taken from performances from their hugely successful U.S. tour a year before, when Mick, Keith and company headlined the biggest outdoor stadiums ...

| | Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention Roxy & Elsewhere CD (1974) Remastered
Idea
$8.15 Pricipally recorded live at The Roxy, Hollywood, California from December 10-12, 1973; the Auditorium Theater, Chicago, Illinois in 1974; Edinboro State College, Edinboro, Pennsylvania on May 8, 1974.
It's no secret that one of the most powerful weapons in Zappa's arsenal was his sense of humor, which was at its height in live performance. Consequently, there's no better way to get a feel for the full scope of Zappa's music than on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE. This set finds Frank at his mid-'70s peak, working with Ruth Underwood, Don Preston, George Duke, etc. While all the tunes are technically impeccable (often featuring trademark feats of counter-intuitive derring-do), it's Zappa's humorous interaction with the band and the audience that puts the real spark into this recording.
Delivering lengthy monologues ...
| | Softies CD (1996)
Idea
$9.89 The first word that pops up when listening to the self-titled, eight-song Softies EP -- the first for the duo of Rose Melberg and Jen Sbragia -- is "sweet." It sounds sweet, feels sweet, and, on songs such as the opener "Snow Like This" and "Half as Much," is entirely, sweetly affecting, the kind of music you could snuggle up to or use to brighten a gloomy, rainy day, this despite the fact that the album, itself, is wholly about approaching or being or feeling in the dumps, being disappointed, losing love or wanting to be in love or missing someone. It is the sound of the void buried deep in your insides that is difficult to put your finger on, a sort of misery-loves-company companion. The Softies is fully stripped down until only a couple strummed electric guitars remain, but it is not a folk album. The EP is straight melancholy pop taken to its most bare-boned plaintiveness; for all its sadness, though, the music is never sullen, ...
| | Everclear Songs From An American Movie, Vol. 2: Good Time For A Bad Attitude CD (2000)
Idea
$7.65 Volume One, released earlier in 2000, was Everclear's sunniest, most pop-oriented, and instrumentally varied album. Volume Two, on the other hand, is closer to alt-rock business as usual, a heavy guitar album with leader Art Alexakis as lyrically cheesed-off as ever (and brilliantly so--not for nothing did Randy Newman announce that Alexakis was his current fave songwriter).
Put the two halves together and what do you have? Well, a modern ...
| | Uncle Bonsai Myn Ynd Wymyn CD (1987)
Idea
$14.69 During their eight years of existence, Uncle Bonsai released only two albums: A Lonely Grain of Corn (1984) and Boys Want Sex in the Morning (1986). Near the end of the band's existence, in December 1987, they recorded a show that they put out themselves as a 23-song double-length cassette called Myn Ynd Wymyn. It was made available only to their mailing list and a few stores. In 1992, former Uncle Bonsai member Andrew Ratshin trimmed the album down to a 17-song version released on his Yellow Tail Records label, and that is the version under consideration here. Like a standup comic, Ratshin (who wrote all the songs, three of them with group member Arni Adler) has an eye for the details and foibles of contemporary life, and the album is a virtual compendium of the commonplaces of suburbia. At one point, he disparages the credentials of Middle American commentators like Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp, then sings his own tale of "Me and Mrs. Middle America," which, like many of the songs here, is a recitation of the events that make up ordinary existence ("We go to the bank/ We run to the cleaners/ We hop on a bus/ It takes us back home"). At times, the intention clearly is humorous and satiric -- as in "Another Fat Song" (which concerns ...
