| | Toby Keith American Ride CD (2009)
See You On Other Side Limited Deluxe album
$13.35 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I Had One," and the heavy blues stomp "Loaded" -- but spends more time on the softer side, even when he kicks up a bit of dust on the dancefloor on "You Can't Read My Mind" or does a funny, respectful salute ...

See You On Other Side Limited Deluxe music CDs
$17.89 Buffalo Bop may occasionally slip some uneven rock & roll songs into its other collections, but when it comes to Strictly Instrumental, they've come up with 30 solid tracks, running the gamut of influences from country/rockabilly (the Big Four) and blues (Rex Qual) to Chuck Berry licks (Howie & the Crystals, the Sensations) and surf (the Ree-Gents). Not all of the bands present have distinctive characters, although a few are more accomplished than the others -- "Ce'NY" by Jerry and the Silvertones, "Rockin' Hall" by Howie & the Crystals, "Workout" by the Journeymen (whose drummer sounds like Keith Moon on speed), and "Devil's Run" by Herb Kliebe's Nervous Kats show off players who obviously put in time and effort, and had the talent to make it show on record, and Rex Qual's "Tranquilizer Boogie" is distinctive as a blues-based instrumental in the midst of these surf and rock & roll sounds. The Eltro-Tones ("Ghost ...

See You On Other Side Limited Deluxe songs
$13.15 It's doubtful that power metal will ever regain the huge commercial momentum it enjoyed in the '80s, when bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Queensr˙che sold millions of albums. But the power metal revival movement of the '90s and 2000s has enjoyed a small cult following, especially in Europe -- nothing to rival the sales of Queensr˙che's Operation: Mindcrime or Priest's Screaming for Vengeance back in the day, but not something to be ashamed of either. Most of today's power metal revival bands offer an exact replica of power metal as it was known in the late '70s and early '80s; on Infernal, however, Silent Voices adds a bit of thrash to the mix. This Finnish band is power metal first and foremost, but the interesting thing is the way they manage to incorporate both progressive rock and thrash at the same time. If Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Queensr˙che, and King Diamond are the main ingredients, Silent Voices sees to it that some tasty extra ingredients come in the form of Rush, Kansas, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer as well as Metallica, Megadeth, and Venom. That thrash edge gives Infernal ...

See You On Other Side Limited Deluxe CD music
$5.70 With so many heavy metal and progressive rock bands called Asgard out there (at least ten so-named acts have produced recordings since the early 1970s), Belarus quartet Asguard's erroneous spelling seems more like a brilliant idea than a faux pas. Equally worthy of distinction is the group's unusual fusion of extreme metal's various subgenres, which, although black and death metal dominant throughout typical tracks "The Vision of Dream" and the two-part "The Black Wandering of Death" (which combine scratch-throated voices and cold guitars with Behemoth-like percussive precision) frequently detour into unexpected side alleys. ...
