The Force M.D.'s were mainly one-hit wonders during their peak, but their single hit, "Chillin'," sent them into the stratosphere, and in turn quietly reinvented quiet storm/R&B for the '80s with their doo wop-heavy "Tender Love." True, New Edition were already doing that several albums earlier, but not as straight as Force M.D.'s (New Edition would later join in the chant with Under the Blue Moon and Heart Break). Named after the single, the rest of the Chillin' album is pretty straightforward -- catchy R&B with slick pop hooks, with some moments being downright horrible ("Force M.D.'s meet the Fat Boys"). ~ Rob Theakston Force MD's Chillin Songs | 1. | One Plus One |

Chillin
$9.49 BROTHERS won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. "You Don't Have To Be Afraid" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
Take 6 faces the classic problem for an act that crosses genres -- in their case from gospel to R&B -- to retain what makes them so effective in their original field (and keep their original audience) while expanding their scope beyond it. They owed their original impact to the awe they inspired as six a cappella singers, and so revitalized gospel. That was on their first, million-selling album; by their third, they had added instruments and taken a more conventional approach. Here, on their fourth, they fell between chairs, with Brian McKnight's production and musical arrangements making them sound like a more wholesome Boyz II Men while they wrote first-person songs with titles like "You Don't Have to Be Afraid" and "I'll Be There" as if speaking in the name of Christ while sounding suspiciously like a boyfriend. Of course, that's an old gimmick in crossover Christian music, but the old problem is that it never gets sexy enough to be convincing. The difference was marked in a song like "Jesus Makes Me Happy," when the group really laid their cards on the table and sounded more fervent as a result. But there wasn't enough of that on an album that frequently masked the group's real strengths. ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Force MD's Touch And Go CD (1987)
Chillin
$10.19 By 1987, Force M.D.'s were flying high on the wings of love with their quiet storm anthem "Tender Love," selling out stadiums and winning the hearts of teenyboppers who once only prayed to the church of New Edition. But two of the group's biggest hits were to arrive on 1987's Touch and Go, with the leadoff track, "Love Is a House," heading to the upper echelons of the pop charts and "Touch and Go" charting in the R&B Top Ten for several weeks. The production on Touch and Go is crisp and super polished, which is standard for an era just discovering the world of digital production. And that sterility gives Touch and Go its supreme flaw: it's too clean and as a result feels generic and easily forgettable, along with several other records from the pre-new jack era. Casual fans would be best served by looking for one of the readily available greatest-hit compilations for their fix of Force M.D.'s. ~ Rob Theakston
The title track was a Top 10 R&B hit, and The Force MDs were at their best on this album. The leads, harmonies, songs, production, and arrangements never sounded better, and they certainly paved the way for the many New Jack vocal groups of the '90s. ~ Ron Wynn

$7.35 Southern gospel and bluegrass have often borrowed from one another: the former borrowing banjos, guitars, and mandolins; the latter borrowing songs and singing styles. It's unlikely, in many cases, that a listener would be able to tell the difference between a bluegrass and a gospel band delivering a gospel song. True Bluegrass Gospel offers a broad survey covering 20 tracks from a number of well-known bluegrass and gospel artists, from tradition-bound Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys to the newgrass-influenced Seldom Scene, and from the group harmony of Paul Williams & the Victory Trio to the individual vocals of Rhonda Vincent. The theology that underlines each of these songs (fundamentalist Christianity), ...
