Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English Released in the same year as Clint Eastwood's DIRTY HARRY (1971), William Friedkin's THE FRENCH CONNECTION marked the beginning of a new era of gritty, urban police dramas. Here, the theme of tough-cop amorality serves a conservative demand for a police-state crackdown on the domestic chaos and subversive youth culture of the Vietnam War period.
The film is based on the true story of two New York City police detectives and their investigation into a French heroin smuggling operation. THE FRENCH CONNECTION is perhaps best known for its infamous, masterfully filmed chase scene (influenced by Peter Yates' BULLITT) in which the lead policeman, Popeye Doyle (Gene Hackman), recklessly drives a stolen car through oncoming traffic in pursuit of a sniper escaping by elevated train. The thrill of this crime drama is accentuated by director William Friedkin's early European influences, perhaps best represented by the handheld documentary-style visuals and Friedkin's claims that the Oscar-winning screenplay was frequently disregarded in favor of improvisation. THE FRENCH CONNECTION marked not only a significant change of course for his career, but also a stylistic shift that all of Hollywood would soon follow. Theatrical release: October 9, 1971
Based on events that occurred in 1961.
Shot almost entirely on location in New York City, and briefly in Marseilles, France.
THE FRENCH CONNECTION is number 70 on the American Film Institute's list of America's 100 Greatest Movies.
People were allegedly injured during the filming of the famous chase scene.
Friedkin is rumored to have shot parts of the chase scene himself. French Connection Quotes/Excerpts: "Ever pick your feet in Poughkeepsie?"--Popeye Doyle (Gene Hackman), spoken to various characters

$12.85 The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this genre. Based on the Lupin comics by the artist Monkey Punch, CAGLIOSTRO is a great heist/chase film that surpasses most similar live action fare and breezes by with more than a couple of inventive set pieces, as well as some excellent comic dialogue.
100 minute Japanese animation DVD. Master thief Lupin III, aka the wolf, and his right-hand gunman Jigen are hot o n the trail of a counterfeiter who swindled them...but they find far more than they are looking for when their search leads them to the secluded European country of Cagliostro.

$32.75 Director Goro Taniguchi (INFINITE RYVIUS, S-CRY-ED) fashions another imaginative take on intergalactic space travel in his sci-fi series PLANETES. In the year 2075, travel between the earth, moon, and various space stations has become a routine part of human existence. But the increased traffic leaves behind floating pieces of debris that present a deadly hazard for traveling starships and must be cleared by a squad of hardworking debris collectors. As the collectors' newest recruit, idealistic Ai Tanabe quickly loses her enthusiasm for outer space when she joins the Half-Section unit and meets her cynical new partner, Hachimaki. But Tanabe soon discovers that hauling in space debris is not only dull and monotonous--it carries with it a unique set of difficulties and dangers. PLANETES avoids the wild, fantastical tropes of much sc-fi anime in favor of realistic hard science that emphasizes character development and gorgeously rendered animation. This collection presents the whole series in its entirety.

French Connection video
$19.55 Despite its girls-with-guns storyline and doe-eyed characters dressed in schoolgirl outfits, the action anime series GUNSLINGER GIRL eschews its genre's typically breezy comedy style for a dark and brooding exploration of female childhood. Set in Italy, the series centers on a little girl named Henrietta, who is taken in by a seemingly benevolent social welfare agency after her entire family is murdered in a massacre. But the organization is really a front for a secret government program that adopts terminally ill or orphaned girls, erases their memories, and endows them with implanted cybernetic devices that transform them into perfectly conscience-free assassins. As part of the reconditioning process, the girls are partnered with older male agents who not only provide them with professional instruction but act as their surrogate older brothers. Moody, stylish, and violent, the series chronicles Henrietta's training with her partner Jose with equal parts high-octane action sequences and poignant character studies of the pair's evolving relationship. The anime kicks off with this first volume of episodes.
Set in scenic Italy, Gunslinger Girl uses beauty to offset the story's tragedy. Utilizing a combination of awe-inspiring animation and a superbly scored soundtrack, the series' overall effect is a poignant delight.

| | Mr. And Mrs. Smith DVD (2005) Pan & Scan; Dubbed; Subtitled
French Connection DVD
$9.69 Named after a 1941 Alfred Hitchcock film, MR. AND MRS. SMITH is really its own ball of flaming wax, with enough sizzling chemistry between stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to blow up a small building. He shows he is equally adept in comedy and action, and she manages to set new screen standards of bad-ass sexiness. It's impossible to dislike this pair, or a movie that makes being married seem like such insane fun. Pitt and Jolie play extremely skilled professional assassins who have managed to stay married for five years without ever realizing each other's profession because they work for rival agencies and the work is top secret. When their paths eventually cross on a high-level hit, one of the most lethal battles of the sexes in the history of cinema is officially on. Thanks to a genuinely witty script, the issue isn't who will win, but whether the couple will realize they are meant for each other before it's too late. Director Doug Liman was obviously the right choice for the material, having proved his ability to fuse engaging romance with knuckle-biting action in 2002's THE BOURNE IDENTITY. The comedy is sophisticated and witty, the action is visceral and intense, and there is plenty of satisfying eye candy. Another plus is Vince Vaughn as a fast-talking fellow hit man who lives with his mother. The cinematography is by Bozan Bajelli (the genius behind Abel Ferrara's best mid-1980s work) who imbues each environment, whether it's the Smith's house, or the urban streets--with its own evocative color scheme and feel.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie star. Extras include never-before-seen deleted scenes, commentaries, and more.
