Soundtrack English; English Subtitles MODERN ROMANCE is Albert Brooks's sendup of relationships in the 1980s. Brooks is a sound man for movies, struggling to maintain a modern attitude about love despite his old-fashioned values. The quaalude scene is a comedy classic. Film editor Robert Cole is breaking up with his girlfriend, Mary--again. Even Mary doesn't really believe he's serious. Sure enough, after 24 hours of trying to start his life over by launching a new exercise program and setting up a date with a woman he once met but can't seem to remember, he becomes desperate to be back with his former love. Mary takes him back, and the codependent couple finds themselves right back in their old dysfunctional patterns of jealousy and insecurity--but at least the sex is great. Albert Brooks again shows his ability to analyze and deconstruct the most everyday elements of life with humor and empathy in this wry, comic view of relationships. George Kennedy has a hilarious cameo as himself in the film-within-the-film that Brooks's character is editing, and director James L. Brooks appears as the neurotic director of the same film. Actor Bob Einstein, best known as Super Dave Osborne, is Albert Brooks's real-life brother. Albert Brooks's birth name was Albert Einstein.
Modern Romance Quotes/Excerpts: "Look, this has nothing to do with 'ludes. It's just a person saying to another person, 'I love you.'"--Robert Cole (Albert Brooks) making a quaalude-influenced declaration of friendship for his assistant, Jay (Bruno Kirby)
"Look how many friends I've got!...Mr. Popularity, Mr. Popularity!"--Robert to his disinterested parakeet, Petey
"I just broke up with somebody. I'm just going to buy a few gifts."--Robert to a parking-lot attendant Modern Romance Reviews: "...Brooks gets good performances....Bob Einstein is particularly amusing..."
-- Har., Variety "...It takes time for the full measure of this movie's meandering, heartfelt nuttiness to make itself known..."
-- Janet Maslin, New York Times "[S]omething fresh, real and, at least to date, completely inimitable."
-- Dave Kehr, New York Times "Among the best Brooks outings, this is a movie of twisted prime moments."

Imperial Gardens Japanese Restaurant featured It's so great to see the once famous Japanese restaurant, Imperial Gardens, with the owner/proprietor Helen Umezawa along with her sister, May (right before her death) in the restaurant scene. All the movie stars and the famous went to that restaurant of yesteryear. My Mom & Dad worked there and made lifelong friends. Does anyone have remember Helen? She always brought her 2 dogs, Abby and Buffy to the restaurant. She was a wonderful, kind person. Movie was especially great for me because of that. This movie is TOO REAL I think anyone who has been in and out of relationships can relate to this film. Brooks pulls it off very nicely in this comedy. The now late Bruno Kirby is great in this film as is George Kennedy and Kathryn Herrold. Buy this DVD and you will see what I mean. You will say to yourself; BEEN THERE, DONE THAT! I rest my case. Modern Romance video
$16.89 The title refers to the night when three men, Randy (Matt Dillon), his cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) and Detective Dehling (John Goodman), all meet Jewel Valentine (Liv Tyler) at a bar called McCool's. Actually, they don't so much meet her as fall under her spell when they first lay eyes on her. In her clinging red dress she looks like a cross between a beautiful damsel in distress and the Lady In Red looking for John Dillinger. The story begins with Randy, desperate to be rid of Jewel, hiring a sleazy hitman, played by Michael Douglas in an outré toupee. His story of how Jewel led him to ruin, filmed in a stylized flashback bathed in blue, is mirrored by Carl talking to his therapist--played with a delicious verve by Reba McEntire, and Detective Dehling talking with ...

$14.49 Following the success of REPULSION, THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS was Roman Polanski's first big-budget film, a noticeably more upscale and lavish production than any of his previous offerings.
