Unsurprisingly, the first rock opera about the Messiah caused the mother of all religion-based controversies on its 1970 release. JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR (the original album was released before its theatrical production, and featured Deep Purple's Ian Gillan in the title role), is based on a loose, often anachronistic interpretation of the last week of Jesus' life. The fact that its music sounded dated even at the time didn't stop it spawning several hits, notably the title track and the Mary Magdalene lament, "I Don't Know How to Love Him."

2005 digitally remastered (at Abbey Road studios) deluxe edition of the critically acclaimed London 1996 cast.

Principal cast includes: Ted Neely (Jesus Christ); Carl Anderson (Judas Iscariot); Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdalene); Joshua Mostel (King Herod).

4 stars A little disappointed……
I don’t want to be misunderstood, this is a great CD, but I was expecting to hear Ian Gillian’s voice as Jesus. Any way the sound is just great, this version is a lot different than the American version. If you like Jesus Christ Superstar you will like this version, but if you are Deep Purple fan you better look for the original version.
