(1 Customer Review)
Tracy Byrd's first album of the new century starts out with something you could easily mistake for a Warren Zevon song. This versatile country artist's subtly changing song choices hold the listener's interest over the entirety of TEN ROUNDS; he's carved a niche for himself as the gutsy antithesis to the glitzier pop-country of Shania Twain or Garth Brooks.
"Somebody's Dreams" is an effective chronicling of life's misfortune's that underscores Byrd's rootsy appeal. Elsewhere he strays into Jimmy Buffet territory with the marimba-accompanied "Ten Rounds with Jose Cuervo," gets all introspective on "How Much Does the World Weigh," and makes a credible and rocking bid for the nation's airwaves with "Summertime Fever," a litany of funtime activities that's as smoothly delivered as suntan oil. " A Good Way to Get on My Bad Side" is pretty much Byrd's statement of intent--he likes Van Halen and George Jones, Charlie Daniels and the Rolling Stones, hates "cowboy rap" (?), and feels that "a little sissy in a cowboy hat ain't country," statements which will probably be endorsed by and further endear him to his many fans.

| | Mark Wills Greatest Hits CD (2002)
Ten Rounds CD music
$12.59 Like his contemporaries Clay Walker and Kenny Chesney, Mark Wills has always been at his best on the weepers. GREATEST HITS wisely sticks to ballads and thus makes for a cohesive, consistent and enjoyable listen. The tunes are arranged chronologically, so it's easy to hear how Wills's sound has become increasingly pop-oriented. Though the production eventually becomes so slick there's little to remind one that this is a country album, Wills's extraordinarily sensitive vocals more than make up for the rather bland backing tracks. In addition to the chart toppers, GREATEST ...

Ten Rounds music CDs
$14.65 Acoustics was released in 1979, some two years after Tony Rice's involvement with the David Grisman Quintet's debut album. Like the Grisman recording, Acoustics proved to be a groundbreaking album for progressive bluegrass musicians. The music on Acoustics is all instrumental and features an incredible group of musicians including Sam Bush, Richard Greene, Mike Marshall, Todd Phillips, and, on ...

| | Singin' With Emmylou, Vol. 2 CD (2003)
Ten Rounds music CDs
$19.55 SINGIN' WITH EMMYLOU VOL. 2 features duets and tracks on which Emmylou Harris sings background vocals.
The second volume of Singin' With Emmylou, a collection of duets and backing vocal appearances by Emmylou Harris, is no barrel scraper. If anything it is even more eclectic than the first. If Volume 1 offered names and historical country music and pop figures, Volume 2 offers the other side of Harris' contributions -- some to lesser-known artists, some to artists well outside of the country music confines, and some appearances with grand legends. The set opens with a duet of Harris with Johnny Cash. The song "As Long as I Live" is a Roy Acuff classic. Coming from Cash's 1988 collaborative album "Water From the Well," it is easily the strongest track on it. Along the way there are some soundtrack appearances such as her duet with Patty Griffin on Beth Nielsen Chapman's "Way Beyond the Blue," from the film Where the Heart Is. It is one of Harris' most stirring performances in the last 20 years having a foil that is every bit her vocal equal. There are some killer performances of Harris singing with Bill Monroe, the late Nicolette Larson, Lucinda Williams, Tammy Wynette, ...

| | Michael Dyer Our Unwinding Time CD (2007)
Ten Rounds album
$10.59 "Our Unwinding Time" is Michael Dyer's second CD and is in the same beguiling, lyrical style as his first CD ("Nothing Seems Like What It Seems"). The first song of his new CD (with the same title as the cover) is very interesting. It is about a relationship that is unraveling as though time itself is going backwards. As Michael sings: "As every kiss of mine unpresses your lips. As every fallen glass, now untips … My hand across your body now untravels. As our time unwinds, and our love unravels…" some of the lead guitar notes start becoming BACKWARD notes, and all the more impressive, they continue to harmonize appropriately with the other forward notes. As the song progresses, more notes become backwards and even some of the later lyrics are sung backwards: "Lips your unkissing am I. Hands your unholding sigh I. ... Eyes my into unlooking are you." All the while, the song retains its arrestingly beautiful themes, with rich vocal harmonies, exotic keyboard synthesizer chords, subtle guitar finger-picking and strong thematic bass riffs. It is impressive that all vocals and instruments are performed solely by Michael. He starts by carefully selecting and editing multiple drum-synthesized patterns and then plays each new instrument as he listens to what he has recorded thus far. On vocals he harmonizes with himself. Michael clearly has a great talent in creating interlinking musical themes, with a mastery of both guitar and keyboard. The second song ('Mid Moss-Covered Boulders) tells the story of ...
