The number of electronica-spawned compilations that are designed for swank chilling must be in the thousands by now, but Water Music's Dirty Martini is an inspired collection despite its groan-worthy title and predictable packaging (martini glass on the front, half-naked urbanite vixen on the back). Nostalgic, cool, and campy numbers from Ursula 1000 and the Frank Popp Ensemble warrant the connection to the cocktail culture while dreamier, more subdued tracks from the Dining Rooms and Grand Pianoramax -- with the ever tasteful and tasty Nuspirit Helsinki on remix duties -- give the collection some depth. It's a well-chosen and sequenced offering from the label and delivers on the cover's promise of "sultry." ~ David Jeffries Dirty Martini Music Review Purchase Dirty Martini CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Gimme Shelter DVD (1970)

| | Sufjan Stevens Illinois CD (2005)
Dirty Martini songs
$12.09 The second entry from sui generis singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens in his absurdly ambitious project to make a record for every state in America outdistances even 2003's superb GREETINGS FROM MICHIGAN in scope and beauty. A sweeping paean to the Lincoln state, ILLINOIS weaves together history, personal confession, and detail-filled scenarios with chamber folk, expansive orchestral pop, and back-porch pastoral settings for a stunningly progressive indie gem that sound like Brian Wilson, Stereolab, and Neil Young holding hands in heaven.
Remarkably, ...

| | Pete Tong Essential Selection: Trust The DJ CD (2003)
Dirty Martini songs
$9.79 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Pete Tong.
This album from Pete Tong is available on the Trust The DJ label.
While Pete Tong's unshakeable position in the U.K. and Euro-dance firmament holds fast, his association with Trust The DJ was a clear move to broaden his global listenership via the label's well-trafficked website. Surveying a blend of little-known and newborn labels, Tong's first Trust the DJ mix is a composite of the funkier, techno side of house. Leading off with the insistent bassline of Aural Distortion's "Fragmented 100%" (released on the posh Spanish Luxury Grooves imprint), Tong instantly reaffirms his love for the extended groove. But his affinity for more pop-oriented material is made evident by the selection of tracks: Playgroup's "Make It Happen," as re-worked by Ewan Pearson, and M Factor's "Come Together." Other than the slightly worldbeat-influenced "Hear What Was Said," by Mooncat, there are few stylistic surprises here. And Tong's desire to stay as close to the forefront of the pack (as well as the standard problems with licensing the many white label tracks he regularly plays on the air), probably preclude the inclusion of any the obvious dancefloor anthems. Well-rounded and tasteful, Tong's efforts once again display how he manages to remain a forward-thinking and populist tastemaker. ~ Joe Silva
The ever-steady Pete Tong kept his Essential Selection train on track in 2003 with a stateside edition for Moonshine that was inspired by his summer in Ibiza. While it's tempting to automatically lump this edition in with the innumerable other Essential Selection mixes Tong recorded over the years (usually in conjunction with ffrr in the U.K.), that'd be a mistake because there's nothing generic about this particular edition in terms of music. Sure, back in the '90s Tong was a so-so DJ with all the right connections, but circa 2003 he'd become a force to be reckoned with and truly deserved his lofty billings -- he'd improved his mixing over the years and become more liberal with his track selection, at times eschewing the obvious for the obscure. This 2003 edition showcases these very attributes, as Tong bridges a jumpy 14-track mix as well as anyone realistically could without sacrificing the broad scope that he's chosen to unveil. He opens with some very congenial pop-crossover house (Holloway and Eastwick's "Downtime"), which is perhaps ...
