Laura Pausini, a multilingual Italian pop singer who won a Latin Grammy in 2005 for Best Female Pop Vocal Album, decided to record an album of cover songs when she returned to the studio to record her follow-up effort. This is a fairly standard practice for pop/rock artists, of course, especially in the wake of a mammoth success like the one Pausini experienced with Resta in Ascolto (released concurrently in Spanish as Escucha in the Americas). Yo Canto (likewise released concurrently in Spanish) is a somewhat unusual covers album, however, for it's comprised of Italian pop/rock songs from the 1970s, '80s, and '90s -- few, if any, of which will be familiar to listeners across the Atlantic. Pausini performs the songs in a manner similar to that of Resta in Ascolto: the songs are heavily produced, layered with guitar, bass, and drums in addition to strings and synthesizers, and the performances are quite dramatic, often soaring to intense heights during the choruses, complemented by lyrics that are moody and poetic. This album is a mixture of alternative piano with modern pop and alternative rock. There are elements of 70’s rock, punk, 80’s metal and theatre found in this album as well. Fans of Tori Amos, Placebo, Bowie, Elton John, Billy Corrigan and Violent Femmes should like this CD - as well as anyone that is a fan of music and likes to hear different things. There is definitely an accessible pop element to this album. Though it is a collection of 13 individual songs (and 13 interludes that connect the songs) - the tracks together tell a story. "In Her Name" tells of someone who is on the outside of a great wilderness with the question, “who am I?”, much like myself at the beginning of this project. An explosion is heard, a figure is seen disappearing into the forest, a whisper is heard “follow the Goddess for she knows the way”, and you follow inside, beginning your journey. At the end of the many twists and turns in valleys of this wilderness, you finally meet the Crone, the old wise woman who answers all. This allegory is drawn in the metaphor of the Moon. There are 13 lunar cycles in a year, and the moon passes through 13 different zodiac signs each cycle - so there are 13 songs on the album. Each song represents one of the three phases of the moon: maiden, mother or crone - and each song represents a sign of the zodiac that the moon passes through. If you know your moon sign, then that is your song. “Very First” for example is the new moon in the maiden phase in Aries. The maiden phase is one of youth, exploration and learning, and Aries is the God of War. A fire sign, Aries is a call for action - the power of will.
