| | Robben Ford Soul On Ten CD (2009)
Jhaptal
$15.29 Personnel: Robben Ford (vocals, guitar); Neal Evans (Hammond b-3 organ); Toss Panos (drums). Audio Mixer: John Paterno. Photographer: George Wells. Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences. He kicks off the set with a lazy, wah-wah enhanced "Supernatural," the title track to his 1999 disc, and revs up the energy from there, jumping into the instrumental "Indianola." This is where Ford seamlessly combines rock, blues, jazz, and surf into a five-minute tour de force, leading one to believe that a vocal-free show might display his superb guitar talents even better. Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth ...

| | Hampton Hawes All Night Session 1-3 CDs (2007) (Import) Spain; United Kingdom
Jhaptal
$18.79 2007 two CD collection features all three volumes on two discs! Recorded in just one night, from the late hours of November 12 to the early hours of November 13, 1956, this session is more like a live date than a trip to the studio, with no repeated numbers and, consequently, no alternate takes. While Hawes' was most often heard in a trio format, this release showcases the pianist in a quartet featuring the guitar magic of Jim Hall. 17 tracks. Definitive Records.
Personnel: Hampton Hawes (piano); Jim Hall (guitar); Bruz Freeman (drums). Additional personnel: Jim Hall. Liner Note Author: Arnold Shaw. Recording information: Los Angeles, CA (11/12/1956/11/13/1956). Originally issued on three LPs, the music resulting from Hampton Hawes' All Night Session! was stereophonically recorded for the Contemporary label in Los Angeles on the night of November 12 and into the morning of November 13, 1956. This session transcended the conventions of studio production by moving steadily from one tune to the next like a live gig with no alternate takes. Here is West Coast bop at its most spontaneous and exciting. Prior to this highly successful quartet experiment, Hawes had recorded mainly with his trio. He said that the addition of guitarist Jim Hall opened up more rhythmic possibilities. The currents passing between Hawes and bassist Red Mitchell were the metabolic pulse of this group; drummer Eldridge "Bruz" Freeman was a replacement for Chuck Thompson, whose heroin habit had forced him out of the band earlier that year. On this night Hawes chose to reinterpret no less than four Dizzy Gillespie compositions, along with themes by Duke Ellington and Duke Jordan as well as six chestnuts from the standard jazz repertoire. But there's nothing "standardized" ...
