This Lone Hill Jazz CD compiles two separate studio sessions by Gerry Mulligan, originally issued separately as Night Lights and Butterfly with Hiccups, with pretty much identical personnel (Bob Brookmeyer, Art Farmer, Jim Hall, Bill Crow and Dave Bailey), except for an alternate version of one track. The master version of "Night Lights" is an elegant, dreamy ballad with the leader playing piano, while the latter version from two years later has a quintet with a completely different makeup and a string section, and Mulligan making a relatively rare appearance on clarinet. The snappy "Festive Minor" is easily the session highlight, with strong solos all around. The selections taken from Butterfly with Hiccups are just as strong, though this album was one of Mulligan's unjustly obscure efforts of the 1960s. The leader again plays a bit of piano on the quirky but catchy title cut and also on "Theme for Jobim," the latter dedicated to his good friend, the genius of bossa nova. The breezy "The Ant Hill" provides the sole extended workout of the session. The sequencing on this European reissue is a bit odd, as the Night Lights material is gathered in the middle of the disc, with four tracks each from Butterfly with Hiccups opening and closing the disc. But due to the difficulty of acquiring the original LPs, this compilation is an affordable alternative for Gerry Mulligan fans. ~ Ken Dryden
This release features the complete studio sessions of Mulligan's outstanding sextet with Farmer, Brookmeyer, Jim Hall, Bill Crow and Dave Bailey recorded during September and October, 1963 and released on Phillips' Night Lights album and Limelight's exceptional Butterfly With Hiccups LP. Also included here as bonus tracks is the complete quartet session featuring Brookmeyer, Crow and Bailey recorded on June 25, 1964 and released on Limelight's Butterfly With Hiccups LP. | | Siouxsie Mantaray CD (2007)
Complete Studio
$9.69 Siouxsie Sioux, after all these years of being a music icon, arrives with her first solo album, titled 'Mantaray'. Features the first single 'Into A Swan' (check out the video for this stormer of a track, Siouxsie is back and looking as stunning as ever!).
Personnel: Siouxsie Sioux (vocals); Steve Evans (guitar, ukulele, keyboards, synthesizer, programming); Phil Andrews (guitar, keyboards, programming); Ted Benham (dulcimer, hammer dulcimer, vibraphone, xylophone); Davide Rossi (strings); Clive Deamer (drums); Hossam Ramzy (percussion). Recording information: France; Riverside Studios, Bath, Somerset, England; Stone Room, Bath, Somerset, England. Photographer: Fiona Freund. After nearly three decades of recording with the Banshees and/or the Creatures, British goth-punk icon Siouxsie Sioux (born Susan Ballion) finally unveiled her first solo outing, MANTARAY, in 2007. Coinciding with her split from longtime musical and romantic partner Budgie (the drummer of both aforementioned acts), the album is clearly a statement of liberation, a point hit home by the surging opener, "Into a Swan," which celebrates transformation, and finds Siouxsie making full use of her powerful voice. While some tracks on MANTARAY reveal a techno veneer (see the industrial-strength rock of "About to Happen"), other numbers nod to Siouxsie's love of dramatic, jazz-tinged tunes, particularly the slinky "Here Comes That Day" and the swooning "Sea of Tranquility." Although some Banshees/Creatures aficionados may have a difficult time warming up to Siouxsie, the solo artist, the record isn't a radical departure from her earlier work, and it finds the revered singer entirely ...

$18.55 Debut album of three-piece MYSTERIES OF THE REVOLUTION featuring BB Davis of the legendary Red Orchidstra. Influences range from Hancock, Zawinul, Bill Evans, to Roland Kirk, Hendrix, Focus, Lifetime, neo-classicism and retro-psychedelica all dished up in a sweaty, heady brew of heavily jazzified, passionate, funked up, blissed-out, head-on grooves with a whole dash a' finesse n' panache. Yeah, really!Formed out of the rhythmic core of his famed Red Orchidstra (whose version of the theme from the seminal '71 Brit gangster movie Get Carter is acknowledged as a groove classic) BB DAVIS' MYSTERIES OF THE REVOLUTION is a collaboration between long-time musical associate French virtuoso keyboardist DAN BIRO and the much sought after UK bassist MARK SMITH.BB DAVIS, whose largesse and unmistakable electric performances are legendary, has grown in stature from the underground and whilst MOTR's eponymous album, in part, evokes the spirit of 70's fusion ...
