| | Pete Siers Those Who Choose To Swing CD (1999)
Legendary Trios
$18.99 Although Pete Siers is the leader on this album, the true star of the set is pianist Johnny O'Neal. Siers' drums are, for the most part, relegated to the background except for his passion for the ride cymbal, which he tends to pound rather than massage. This a Detroit group, all with excellent jazz credentials. Piano player O'Neal spent time withArt Blakey's Jazz Messengers during the early 1980s and then with the Ray Brown Trio. Bassist Paul Keller had been on albums with Russell Malone and Diana Krall. The Trio's leader, Pete Siers, also worked with Malone. Given these references, it is not unreasonable to expect a more innovative, imaginative outcome. Technically, the performances are top-notch; inspirationally, however, they fall a little short of the mark. In fact, those who prefer an abrasive element to their music will find this album slick, and perhaps even dull. Nonetheless, there is some excellent playing by the group, especially O'Neal. Listen to his driving, lyrical piano on Coleman Hawkins' "39"-25"-39." "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" is done in a boppish mode, with O'Neal's piano once again carrying the load supported by Siers' fine brush work and ever present cymbal. Keller is heard to good effect on this vintage 1910 tune. Siers and Keller duet on "Just Squeeze Me" with Keller's bass carrying the melody. Siers lets loose with a rare full drum solo on "Arjuna." With a play list of nine standards and three originals, the first album fromthe Pete Siers Trio is not groundbreaking, but is a haven for pleasant listening. ~ Dave Nathan

| | 2 Bit Pie Islands CD (2006)
Legendary Trios
$14.29 Personnel: Jan Burton, Yukio Ishii, Dilshani Weerasinghe, Marli Buck, Louise Claire Marshall (vocals); Mark Ralph, Neil Davenport (guitar); Mike Bryant, Andy Gray (programming). Arrangers: Jan Burton; Neil Davenport. One of the myriad of bands who owe as much to Depeche Mode as to the Chemical Brothers or even Paul Van Dyk, 2 Bit Pie (whose founders and main members, Jonathan Fugler and Mike Bryant are also part of the British techno outfit Fluke) combine driving beats with dark guitar grooves and Fugler's voice into catchy alternative dance that can work as well in Manchester as in New York. The lyrics, as is often the case in electronica, deal vaguely with general ideas of life and love and the planets and flying away, and are pretty forgettable because of this, turning the vocals into as much of another musical layer as any of the various synthesizers that are also employed, adding to the overall aesthetic. While most of 2 Pie Island stays in the realm of sinister beats with rock-based guitar lines, 2 Bit Pie also explore their trashy dance side in "Nobody Never," industrial in "Pil," and even creepy Delerium-esque opera-techno in "Soto Mundo." Fugler's voice works surprisingly well over all of these (though it is Dilshani Weerasinghe who adds her soprano to "Soto Mundo"), moving from a low whisper to anthemic bursts that would make Bono proud, and the songs on the album, thanks to their haunting beats and steady, dynamic rhythms, catch one's immediate ...
