Klezmer music has been one of the more recent ethnic genres to be subjected to the predations of DJs and electronica funkmeisters, and the results have sometimes been thrilling. But the French Gypsy/Jewish ensemble les Yeux Noirs take the idea of klezmer fusion in a whole different direction, mixing equal parts traditional Romany melodies, Yiddish songs, jazz instrumentation, and a modern pop sensibility with judicious samples and a punky, hard-driving energy, and coming up with something that evokes a multitude of European musical traditions while ultimately sounding wholly unique. On Tchorba the title track swings so hard that it rocks (or vice versa, if you prefer), while "Belle Amour" sounds like Charles Trenet sitting in with Django Reinhardt and "Désirs Dérisoires" brings in a strutting reggae beat. There's a long and brilliant hammered dulcimer solo on the jazzy instrumental "Zam'hora Pe Opt," while "Yankele" is a lovely Yiddish lullaby and "Le Voyage" sets a Baudelaire poem to a rollicking polka rhythm. "Petite" ends the album on a slightly overripe note, but it's not enough to take away significantly from the album's triumph overall. Very highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson
Les Yeux Noirs: Pascal Rondeau (vocals, guitar); Eric Slabiak (vocals, violin, accordion, keyboards); Olivier Slabiak (vocals, violin, programming, sampler); Franck Anastasio (vocals, double bass); Marinel Miu (cimbalom); Francois Perchat (cello); Aidje Tafial (drums).

Down Beat (p.72) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n entertaining sort of French Gypsy music that makes significant emotional and musical referrals to their Yiddish ancestry in Eastern Europe." Dirty Linen (p.87) - "The seven players in Les Yeux Noirs are very good at such fusion, bringing in dulcimer, violin, voices, cello, double bass, accordion, guitar, and other instruments in service, primarily, of groove and atmosphere..." Tchorba album
$10.49 Electric Light Orchetra Part II: Pete Haycock (vocals, guitar, bass); Eric Troyer (vocals, keyboards); Neil Lockwood (vocals); Bev Bevan (drums, percussion, background vocals).
It's an often-forgotten fact that the Electric Light Orchestra was originally conceived as a side project. Following the orchestrated hard rock of the group's final two albums, LOOKING ON and MESSAGE FROM THE COUNTRY, the Move--Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan--decided to further explore this arena with a more classically oriented album under the pseudonym the Electric Light Orchestra. This album was a commercial flop and Wood left to form the more experimental Wizzard. Lynne and Bevan bagged the Move and made ELO their primary endeavor.
This is a transitional album not unlike the Move's LOOKING ON. Like that album, ELO II consists of five very lengthy tracks evenly roughly split between Lynne's Beatlesque pop-rock and classically inspired orchestral interludes, featuring a conceptually obvious ...
| | Alisa Fineman Closing The Distance: Poems, Prayers And Love Songs CD (2005)
Tchorba CD music
$18.99 There's no doubting the talent Alisa Fineman's assembled for this release: Alex de Grassi and Michael Manring are just two of the names helping her out. Their skill and style ensure strong arrangements and a marvelously polished sound. But it also removes all the rawness and grit, giving an evenness to everything, with carefully overlaid layers of vocals and everything just so on this set of mostly traditional Jewish material. Fineman herself is a good singer who knows how to use her voice to great effect, singing in Hebrew, Ladino, and Arabic. The musicians, meanwhile, are eminently tasteful, never overplaying, and leaving plenty of air on the songs. In other words, it's impossible to fault, and it is a good album. But at times it simply seems too polite and lacking in the fire and passion that brings music alive. ~ Chris Nickson
"Alisa's voice is at once delicate and powerful, warm yet mysterious, but above all, it is an open invitation to musicians from diverse traditions to share in the discovery of something new", says Alex de Grassi.Alisa has just completed work on a new CD, one which marks a radical, but also natural, departure from her contemporary personal music. Along with producer Alex de Grassi, Alisa has collected and arranged these traditional Jewish lyrics in a lush setting of world-music instrumentation to showcase the deep musical roots of her cultural heritage."Alisa's CD is a marvelous addition to the contemporary voices who continue to give life and vitality to the Jewish tradition. Alisa's heart is as warm as her superb voice," says Peter Yarrow."Very cool mix of the Jewish Diaspora," says Laney Goodman of NPR's "Women in Music."It has to do with generosity. What makes Alisa's songs stand apart is her own sense and gift of generosity. - Robin Roberts, The Open Road, KUSP, Santa Cruz, CA"National award winning singer-songwriter Alisa Fineman has earned renown for her world-class alto voice with it's dusky tones and original songs." $13.25 In experimental circles, electronica-related and otherwise, the mid-2000s marked a slight return to the song format. Call it the logical extension of the underground folk revival or more simply a desire to apply experimental findings to genres of wider appeal, the fact remains that noisy textures, electronic constructs, and post-rock anthems permeated into the song realm, to a point where some reviewers started writing ...
