Looking even less legit than the illegit-looking compilation of early recordings released in 2004, Collectables by Ashanti is an official compilation from The Inc released to coincide with the 2005 holiday shopping season. A succinct disc at ten tracks and 40 minutes, it throws together remixes and a handful of new recordings, including the ruggedly sweet "Still on It" (featuring Paul Wall and Method Man), the drama-free "I Love You," and the Chink Santana-produced "Show You" -- which is like a lukewarm scramble of some of her biggest singles. Nothing here will appeal to casual fans, but those who have bought each proper Ashanti album on-sight will be happy to obtain the remixes of "Rain on Me" (with Ja Rule, Charli Baltimore, and Hussein Fatal), "Only U" (with Ja Rule, Caddillac Tah, Merce, and Black Child), "Still Down" (with Caddillac Tah), and "Focus" (with Free). [A clean version of the disc was also made available.] ~ Andy Kellman
Given Ashanti's tenure for Irv Gotti's Murder Inc. label, the R&B star's strong ties to hip-hop are not surprising. Even though Gotti's company softened its image a bit by changing its name to The Inc. Records, Ashanti stayed true to her rap-friendly background, releasing the rhyme-laden COLLECTABLES BY ASHANTI in 2005. Consisting primarily of remixes and previously unreleased tracks, this compilation boasts a legion of gruff-voiced MCs, including Ja Rule, Method Man, Caddillac Tah, and Black Child. As always, however, the expressive singer shines the brightest when carrying her own tunes, as on the gentle, chiming "I Love You" and the beat-laden "I Found It in You."
Personnel: Ashanti (vocals); Free, Ja Rule, Method Man, Paul Wall , Black Child, Caddillac Tah, Merce (rap vocals).

| | Al Green Here I Am CD (2001)
Collectables By Ashanti songs
$5.59 CEMA Special Markets' budget-line collection Here I Am does a really nice job picking out highlights from Al Green's classic Hi recordings. Of course, Green was arguably the most consistent soul vocalist of the '70s -- you could pick songs at random and come up with a very entertaining collection. And that's essentially what has happened here. There is no rhyme nor reason as to why certain singles were chosen over others, or why these particular album tracks are featured, but it's inarguable that hearing "Call Me," "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)," "Belle," "Livin' for You," "L-O-V-E," "Full of Fire" and "Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy)" on one disc is very pleasurable indeed. Sure, any version of the Greatest Hits albums is preferable to this, as are the original albums, but this still is a good choice for listeners on a tight budget. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Ice Bad Blood CD (1998)
Collectables By Ashanti album
$14.29 By the time Ice had reconstituted, Martin and Broadrick's ear had taken in hip-hop as a key influence, resulting in a slew of guest MCs taking a bow throughout Bad Blood. Not every vocalist comes from that particular background, it should be noted; indeed, on half the tracks none other than Einsturzende Neubaten's Blixa Bargeld participates! Martin's expected roaring isn't present much here -- there's little distortion or stretched out syllables, while a spoken/sung style often takes the fore, cutting in, out and around the guest turns. Tricky if anything is the role model for Martin, at least to an extent. DJ Vadim crops up on two tracks as well, while Scott Harding contributes beats and loops throughout, but for all the various cameos the core of Ice remains remarkably stable. If there's a musical change, though, it's stripping back Broadrick's punishing guitars in favor of the rasped and whispered singing and MC work. Rather than blaring like a monster, Broadrick keeps the same slow drone pace on his chosen instrument but buries and echoes it heavily, lurking like a threat rather than just plain rampaging. The end result sounds a bit like Ice-goes-trip-hop, for better or worse, specifically in the Massive Attack vein of looming, unsettled doom, though without the weirdly pretty and human edge that leavens the ...
