A three-part anthology film about love and sexuality by three directors from three distinct cultures. From a relationship unrequited for many years between a high end call girl and her tailor to a menage-a-trois between a husband and wife on the Tuscan seaside, to an exploration of an erotic dream by a psychiatrist and his patient. Prepare to explore the deepest realms of human desire. Director: Steven Soderbergh, Wong Kar-Wai, Michelangelo Antonio. Actors: Alan Arkin, Gong Li, Robert Downey, Jr. Three award-winning directors take a look at eroticism, sex, and love in different ways in the international omnibus film EROS. Hong Kong's Wong Kar-Wai (IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, CHUNGKING EXPRESS) contributes "The Hand," a moving, poignant tale of a simple tailor, Zhang (Chang Chen), who becomes obsessed with an elegant, demanding, beautiful call girl, Ms. Hua (Gong Li), as he makes special dresses for her, knowing that she will wear them while being with other men. As her life dovetails, Zhang is faced with the choice of remaining her friend or leaving her to drown in the gutter. In "Equilibrium," writer-director Steven Soderbergh (TRAFFIC, ERIN BROCKOVICH) tells a black-and-white noir farce starring Robert Downey Jr. as an ad man relating his erotic dream to a psychiatrist (Alan Arkin) who appears to be more interested in peeping out his office window. And in "The Dangerous Thread of Things," Italian master Michelangelo Antonioni (BLOWUP, L'AVVENTURA) relates the story of fast-living rich people who toy with sex and romance as if they're games, as a husband (Christopher Buchholz) and wife (Regina Nemni) both become curious about a woman (Luisa Ranieri) who rides her horse across the beach. EROS is a tribute to Antonioni--he was 89 years old when he began filming his segment in 2001--who helped choose Wong and Soderbergh because both have pointed to him as a major influence. Theatrical Release: APRIL 8, 2005 Eros Reviews: "[Antonioni's] wise, reverberating piece contains unspoken volumes."
-- Dave Kehr, New York Times 3 stars out of 5 -- "[S]et in nocturnal '60s Hong Kong, it's a gorgeously shot study of the unconsummated relationship between a courtesan and her tailor."-- Tom Dawson, Total Film "[S]hot in deep, rich chiaroscuro by Christopher Doyle....Suffused with the yearning, muted eroticism that director Wong Kar Wai has made himself a master of."-- Philip Kemp, Sight and Sound "Wong whips up a ripe fable of lifelong obsession..."
-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "Antonioni can still frame an image like nobody's business, and his editing is typically meticulous; the visuals have an architectural integrity that is tragically rare in much contemporary cinema."
-- Glenn Kenny, Premiere "Wong is a melancholy artist, a master of longing with an exquisite eye."-- Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times "Mr. Antonioni still has a lively eye..."-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "The Wong Kar-Wai film is erotic."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

$16.89 The title refers to the night when three men, Randy (Matt Dillon), his cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) and Detective Dehling (John Goodman), all meet Jewel Valentine (Liv Tyler) at a bar called McCool's. Actually, they don't so much meet her as fall under her spell when they first lay eyes on her. In her clinging red dress she looks like a cross between a beautiful damsel in distress and the Lady In Red looking for John Dillinger. The story begins with Randy, desperate to be rid of Jewel, hiring a sleazy hitman, played by Michael Douglas in an outré toupee. His story of how Jewel led him to ruin, filmed in a stylized flashback bathed in blue, is mirrored by Carl talking to his therapist--played with a delicious verve by Reba McEntire, and Detective Dehling talking ...

$14.49 Based on the novel and play by Alexandre Dumas and following six silent productions of the story, George Cukor's CAMILLE is a monument to 1930s romantic glamour. Greta Garbo stars in what many consider her greatest role, as the beautiful courtesan Marguerite Gautier, who is destroyed by her love for a young French nobleman, Armand (Robert Taylor). Despite having established a comfortable life as the consort of the Baron de Varville (Henry Daniell), Marguerite finds herself moved by the other's ardor and resolves to leave the baron. However, her newfound emotion raises conflicts, and to prove her love, she must sacrifice her own happiness. Marguerite is portrayed with supreme elegance by the Oscar-nominated Garbo in an opulent setting that is conjured masterfully by director Cukor. As Armand, Taylor gives a smoothly assured performance, and Daniell plays the baron with a subtle and charismatic menace. A truly classic visual spectacle, the film is sublime; the stunning black-and-white original is recommended viewing, although a colorized version also exists.
