Go Set Go singer and songwriter Mike TV's songs hide a dark secret--the lyrics of this autobiographical collection of acoustic-based pieces chronicle a year of dealing with various unpalatable, intensely personal problems. Not that you'd know it from the outwardly cheerfully upbeat nature of songs like "Lift Me Up" (though titles like "I Hate Everyone" and "Suicide" might provide a clue). ORDINARY WORLD conjures the dark flipside of Magnetic Fields' 69 LOVE SONGS, but by the self-deprecating "Music Makes Me Wanna Die," there's a shaft of light at the end of the tunnel.
Get Set Go's debut album "So You've Ruined Your Life" (TSR #1236) caught the attention of music supervisors and college and alternative radio. Their sophomore CD "Ordinary World" is crammed with a whopping 21 tracks of inspired rock, two of which have re

Ordinary World album
$10.69 Get Set Go specialize in a style that is equal parts Weezer (their love of snappy guitar-driven pop) and the Violent Femmes (their quirky lyrics), as evidenced by their 2003 full-length debut, So You've Ruined Your Life. The group is essentially singer, guitarist, and songwriter Mike TV, who is joined by a revolving cast on-stage and in the studio -- usually musicians who are part of their local Highland Park, CA, scene. While they've been known to also play largely acoustic-based tunes, ...
| | Minus 5 I Don't Know Who I Am CD (2003) Let The War Against Music
Ordinary World CD music
$13.85 Although Scott McCaughey pays his bills as a loyal R.E.M. sideman, the longtime Young Fresh Fellows frontman's Minus 5 project has allowed him to explore his fundamental pop/rock leanings with colleague Peter Buck on albums like 2001's acclaimed Let the War Against Music Begin. Recorded in tandem with that set, I Don't Know Who I Am -- a limited-edition disc reportedly restricted to a pressing of just ...

| | Pere Ubu Why I Hate Women CD (2006)
Ordinary World album
$10.79 Named after a hypothetical and non-existent Jim Thompson novel, Pere Ubu's 13th studio album is one of the most interesting of their long tenure, and testament to the continually replenishing spiky ingenuity of group leader (and sole original member) David Thomas. WHY I HATE WOMEN examines a living slice of dread, as expressed by nervous drums, atmospheric guitars, and Thomas's anxiety-ridden singing. The jerky rhythms and vocals of the opening number "Two Girls (One Bar)" are like opening a ...
| | Under Byen Samme Stof Som Stof CD (2006) Digipak
Ordinary World CD music
$13.05 With the rise of groups such as Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Sigur Rós come more textured, orchestrated bands following in their footsteps. Under Byen is such a group, although lead singer Henriette Sennenvalt's fragile delivery on "Pilot" sounds as if it's Björk or PJ Harvey fronting the Sugarcubes. Delicate and yet quite intricate, the song takes on a dreamy but gritty tone as Sennenvalt guides things along à la Nico steering a Velvet Underground number. A slow, creeping song ensues titled "Den Her Sang Handler Om at Få Det Bedste Ud Af Det" which saunters along before strings and more instruments ...
| | Folk Music Of Turkey CD (1994) (Import) United Kingdom
Ordinary World music CDs
$14.55 Recorded in the field in 1968 & 1976. Includes liner notes by Wolf Dietrich.
This collection of field recordings was made in rural Anatolia from 1968 to 1976 by Wulf Dietrich. The sound quality is nearly as good as in a modern studio. The music is fascinating, too. Dietrich made a decision to stay away from the big cities like Istanbul and Ankara, where the music has become westernized. He sought instead to catch Turkish music as it has existed for the last 500 years.
Not that he was averse to innovation. ...
| | Gilby Clarke Swag CD (2002) (Import) Japan
Ordinary World songs
$40.75 Japanese edition of the Guns N' Roses guitarist's 2001 album (domestic isn't scheduled until Jan 22, 2002). Tracks, 'Alien', 'Under The Gun', 'Crocodile Tears', 'Broken Down Car', 'Margarita', 'I'm Nobody', 'Judgement Day', 'Beware Of The Dog', 'Heart Of Chrome', 'Warm Country Sun' & 'Diamond Dogs'.
More important than his years in the Guns N' Roses touring band are Gilby Clarke's days as a guitarist for Kills for Thrills. It was these years in the Los Angeles rock scene that exposed Clarke to the sort of influences that he displays on Swag, his fourth original studio album. The music here evokes all sorts of bands from that scene, from the hedonistic swagger of Faster Pussycat to the clever pop/rock of European imports Hanoi Rocks to the punk-influenced pop of Dramarama. What Clarke may lack in originality he makes up for in spirit, as he really puts in a great performance. His songwriting ...

| | Delta Goodrem Mistaken Identity CD (2004) Australia
Ordinary World CD music
$23.69 As stated in many interviews and press releases, Mistaken Identity, the second release by Australian beauty Delta Goodrem, was fueled and inspired by a central event that occurred in the young star: her tumultuous battle with lymphoma and the struggles of remission. Therefore, it is without surprise that the second release by Goodrem is a much darker, introverted look at the pain and emotional issues handled in her life. Mistaken Identity, contrary to Goodrem's first release, Innocent Eyes, is a ballad-packed album with dramatic beats, moodier lyrics, and deeper meanings beneath the singer's icy pure vocals. The result is chilling, turning the Mandy Moore-esque tones on Goodrem's first release into haunting Celine Dion power ballads. In many cases, this transition works well. Goodrem's voice is very well suited to the adult contemporary market, and the spot-on delivery bodes well for her, since ...
