Jiving The Blues
$15.95 Personnel: Al Kooper (vocals, keyboards); Mike Bloomfield, Carlos Santana (electric guitar); Roosevelt Gook (piano); John Kahn (bass); Skip Prokop (drums); Paul Simon (background vocals); Elvin Bishop. Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Engineers include: Phil Macy, Fred Catero, Don Puluse. Recorded live at Bill Graham's Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, California on September 26-28, 1968. Includes liner notes by Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper and Tom Wheeler. Recorded over three nights in 1968 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, the follow-up to the acclaimed Super Session has its moments, but is mostly long on '60s noodly grooviness and lacking in focus and inspiration. It's notable (sort of) for Bloomfield's singing debut. ~ Cary Wolfson One of the seminal live albums of the late '60s, Live Adventures of Al Kooper & Mike Bloomfield was a natural, organic offshoot of the hugely successful Super Session album from 1968, which contained performances by both of ...
| | Johnny Winter: The Woodstock Experience CDs (2009) Limited Edition
Jiving The Blues
$15.89 Also available in a 3-pack with SECOND WINTER and CAPTURED LIVE. Audio Mixer: Eddie Kramer. Audio Remasterers: Joseph M. Palmaccio; Vic Anesini. Among white blues singers of the 1960s, there were some who studied the music so intently they amazed even the genre's creators with their technical mastery. A select few, however, seemed to be born oozing authenticity, sounding just as soulful as the greatest black bluesmen while forging a completely new sound. Johnny Winter belonged in the second category. A long-haired hippie albino, he astounded initially skeptical listeners with his Howlin' Wolf-like vocals and wild Johnny Guitar Watson-esque guitar stylings. THE WOODSTOCK EXPERIENCE showcases Winter's first taste of national exposure, first with his 1969 self-titled debut album, and then with his set at the Woodstock festival later the same year. The latter recording is the revelation here--a tornado of raging slide guitar and shouted vocals that sounds as if a late night Lone Star State roadhouse gig has been magically transported to the upstate ...
| | Mal Waldron Mal/2 CD (1957)
Jiving The Blues
$9.79 Personnel: Mal Waldron (piano); Sahib Shihab, Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Bill Hardman, Idrees Sulieman (trumpet); Julian Euell (bass); Art Taylor, Ed Thigpen (drums). Recorded in Hackensack, New Jersey on April 19 and May 17, 1957. Originally released on Prestige (7111) except tracks #4 and #5 released on New Jazz (8316). Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley). Before becoming an expatriate in 1965 and eventually settling in Munich, pianist Mal Waldron cut several stateside hard bop albums full of his idiosyncratic and Monk-ish piano work, and featuring choice contributions by some of the music's finest. For this 1957 date, Waldron worked with a stellar sextet interchangeably manned by John Coltrane, Jackie McLean, Idrees Sulieman, Art Taylor, and others. Bookended by the pianist's ebullient "Potpourri" and the avant-noir blues "One by One," the set also includes a fetching cover of Cole Porter's "From This Moment On" and a beautifully complex arrangement of Billie Holiday's ...

Jiving The Blues
$19.69 Francis Hime's second album of the '70s, released four years after the first, finds the basic character of his music unchanged, despite a vastly different lineup. The biggest additions are lyrics and help on vocals from Chico Buarque and Francis' wife, Olivia Hime. The production and arrangements come from Guto Graça Mello and Francis Hime himself. The pair emulates the reflective mood of 1973's Francis Hime, replete with flute and other woodwinds as well as a bit more piano than before. Hime wrote four songs with Chico Buarque (their song of ten years earlier, "Atrás da Porta," had launched Hime's career) as well as one with ...
