Harold Mabern, a superior hard bop pianist, had a rare opportunity to perform a set of unaccompanied solos for this Sackville release. Recorded live from Toronto's Café des Copains and originally broadcast on the radio, Mabern performs six jazz standards (including "Joy Spring," "Pent Up House" and Wayne Shorter's "House of Jade") and a pair of bluesy originals. Although Mabern sounds most comfortable in a trio, he has always been enough of a two-handed player to play solo; he readily acknowledges the influences of Phineas Newborn and Ahmad Jamal. ~ Scott Yanow
This 10 track CD reissues recordings of solo piano performances made in the 1980s at Toronto's Cafe des Copains (Apr. 25th, 1984 and Jan. 9th, 1985), showcasing Harold Mabern's powerful style. Two selections, "Indian Summer" and "Manhattan," are issued h Harold Mabern Joy Spring Songs | 1. | Indian Summer | |

Joy Spring album
$7.59 Previously available only as a limited edition, Japanese import.
Herbie Hancock never really focused on solo piano. However, this 1978 release, which was previously only available in Japan, is a rare gem in the Hancock discography. Thanks to this overdue 2004 reissue, the listener is invited to explore the musical mind of this pianist in an up-close and intimate setting.
All 11 tracks on THE PIANO are quite reflective, with Hancock employing many rich chordal textures and winding melodic gestures throughout. On "My Funny Valentine," Hancock combines the harmonic palette of Bill Evans with his own distinctive phrasing and unexpected modal shifts. His own composition "Blue Otani" is the only bluesy piece on this disc, and here Hancock slyly suggests the stride piano tradition without ever really playing in this style. "Harvest Time" is the most atmospheric piece on the album. As Hancock's fingers glide over the keys, one can almost envision the first blush of daybreak on a farm. For anybody seeking to better understand the conceptual and ...
| | Rob Schneiderman Back In Town CD (2004)
Joy Spring CD music
$13.85 An excellent modern mainstream pianist who is a bit taken for granted, Rob Schneiderman was actually one of the better jazz pianists of the 1990s. On Back in Town, he plays standards but often with subtle surprises. For example, the ballad "Darn That Dream" is taken up-tempo, Jobim's "A Felicidade" is stripped of its bossa nova ...
| | Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD (2005)
Joy Spring music CDs
$13.79 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact ...

| | Marcus Miller Dreyfus Night In Paris CD (2004) Import
Joy Spring album
$13.09 The unique all-star group featured on this live set from 1994 had not only never performed together before as a band, but most of the musicians had never been on the same stage with each other before. Miles Davis had passed away three years earlier, so the two Marcus Miller pieces, "Tutu" (which sounds surprisingly similar to "So What" during the solos even if the chords are different) ...
| | Killing Joke (1980) CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; England; Remastered
Joy Spring CD music
$9.49 Killing Joke's 1980 debut showed much promise from a band that would continue making cutting-edge political anti-rock for two decades. Beginning with "Requiem" and "Wardance," KILLING JOKE is a call to arms against social ills. Jaz Coleman's gravelly vocals, laid against a framework of crunching staccato guitar riffs and light synth accents, give this album a distinctively goth feel.
Punk was still the name of the game at this stage of Killing Joke's development, however, and "The Wait" and "Complications" provide punk fans with ample doses of aggressive rhythms and minimalist metal, while "Change" evokes a smoldering wasteland, or a steaming and stagnating social mire. The tension is palpable in these songs; the band's artistic ability and ideological agenda couldn't be confined to the limitations of punk rock. KILLING JOKE is an excellent sample of the band's repertoire, while only hinting at its talents.
As Killing Joke begins its furious return with "The Death ...
