Every mid-January or so, the music industry pumps out enough love-themed compilation albums to fill the annual Valentine's Day endcaps of every music retailer in America. It's a bit nauseating, frankly. In January 2006, however, Rhino ever so slightly countered this sort of holiday marketing with Love Sucks, a decidedly bitter, dejected, and often downright rotten compilation of anti-love songs. It's a fun idea, for sure, and as is customary for Rhino, the label has done an excellent job compiling this collection. The packaging is colorful and glossy, graced with long, witty liner notes written by Cory Frye that encompass every song here. And yes, the songs are worth mentioning, as all of them are fairly recognizable -- if not the song itself then at least the performer. Every song comes from the rock canon, spanning 1971 (the Velvet Underground's "Who Loves the Sun") to 1992 (Ugly Kid Joe's "Everything About You"). If those two cited songs seem like an odd coupling, that's because they are. Indeed, that's the sort of compilation this is, one that pulls together punk (the Buzzcocks, the Ramones) as well as country-rock (Linda Ronstadt, Gram Parsons), for instance. The odd, sometimes jarring transitions from track to track are half the fun here -- that is, assuming you have a broad taste in rock music. But at only 12 songs (a grand total of 45 minutes), Love Sucks seems brief for an album like this. One well might wish that Rhino would have stretched this CD out to its technological limits, adding another 30 to 35 minutes of music. Another ten or so songs that likewise careen wildly through the rock canon, with only their lyrical themes in common, would certainly add to the fun at hand. Then again, this is a novelty collection, so perhaps it's best to keep the disc brief. In any event, Love Sucks is a fun listen, albeit one that probably only warrants a couple close listens at most and, as a result, isn't a tremendous value, especially considering its brevity. But it is fun, which alone makes it a welcome contrast to the myriad Stan Getz for Lovers-type CDs you're liable to see promoted ad nauseam in the run-up to V-Day. ~ Jason Birchmeier

Before David Gilmour virtually "became" Pink Floyd he was always the most likely member of the band (with the possible exception of de-facto leader Roger Waters) to release a solo album. 1978's welcome eponymous debut showcased his multi-faceted performing talents. The album opener "Mihalis" is an ANIMALS period instrumental, which, along with "Raise My Rent," sounds like an outtake from that ...

Additional personnel includes: Zacharry Brock (violin); Michael Duggan (cello); The Duke Quartet (strings); Steve Hamilton, Juli Wood (saxophone); Richard Sidwell, Steve Sidwell, Mike Plog (trumpet); Jason A. Thor, Neil Sidwell (trombone); Stephen Street (keyboards, bass, programming); Barbara Le Shoure (background vocals). It shouldn't come as a surprise that the sons of Jimmy Webb ("The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress") have an affinity for emotional bombast and Baroque flourishes. Their second album is full of soaring choruses and orchestral backdrops that might as well have been inspired by Tunesmith, Webb the Elder's giant treatise on the art of song. Less predictable are the steps the brothers take toward forging their own distinctively contemporary voice. Their subject matter is the lifestyle of carefree (and careless) swingers, and they capture it in spare, acidic lyrics that are almost the opposite of their father's grandiloquence. "Fluorescent Lights" is typical: ...

I Listen Thru All the Breaking Oceans is the debut full-length for Boston-based Verona Downs, though like most debuts there is a long history leading up to this moment. Greg Jacobs started the group weeping in fits and starts back in the early 90's, working with a revolving cast of musicians including Paula Kelley, Shawn Devlin (Helium), and Olivier Strauch (The Moles, "Instinct"-era). Several 45s and 2 CDs were released, the last of which, Blue Funnel World, Paul Lucas of NY Press wrote: "Every now and then a record comes along by some obscure band that just blows away everything else you've listened to lately and ends up ruling your stereo for a month solid. Blue Funnel World is such a record". Eventually, Ryan Veilleux settled in on lead guitar and Kevin Daly joined on violin, and the band started moving in a new direction. After enlisting the solid, engaging beats of Michael Steigman and convincing Greg's co-worker Lori Murphy to join in on bass and vocals, the band grew into a more fleshed-out, even collaborative, unit. After several shows and a whole set's worth of new material, it was decided that the new line up was deserving of a new name. In early 2000, Verona Downs was born. There have been many shows since, among the highlights an opening slot for Daniel Johnston and Mary Lou Lord in 2002.Which brings us to Breaking Oceans, a record that has been about 2 years in the making. Recorded at the Longhouse with Colin Rhinesmith (Mishima USA, Tiger Saw) in the Winter of 2001, the project had to be put on hold for almost a year, as Colin and his usual mixing partner, Aubrey Anderson, were on tour supporting their own band's debut Skating Club CD through much of 2002. Finally Aubrey returned and mixed the record during the Winter of 2002-03, and Breaking Oceans was finished, though right in time for Greg to see the birth of his first son, Noah, on Christmas Eve. So as you can imagine, the journey from final mixed product to final manufactured product took a bit longer than usual with Greg's hands full the first half of 2003. But what we have as a result is a record as rich, varied and complex as any ordinary 2 years in the lives of regular people who saw their lives change in surprising, unfamiliar, yet provocative ways. From the lush, dirgey opener "Isn't that the Way" to the shimmering boy-girl pop of "Blue Noon," through the spacey yearning of "Feelers" and the lonely radiance of "Green Yellow Red," then ending with the robust 9-minute epic "Slow Fly," this is a record that takes the listener away with it and returns them nourished and altered. Never ...
