Having satisfied its glam yearnings with the Cheap Trick-meets-Kiss-and-goes-to-a-party-thrown-by-The Posies NAVY BLUES, Sloan's 1999 studio album delved into the questionable waters of the concept album. Rather than diving into worlds of wizards and mythological beasts, these Canadian power-pop junkies instead stayed close to home and wrote about moving away from Halifax in pursuit of rock stardom. By avoiding any kind of pretentious storylines, Sloan came up with some potent ear candy.
Once again, chiming guitars, gorgeous harmonies, and gritty melodies rule as the band bounces between tapping into Johnny Marr's breezier moments with the Smiths ("Waiting for Slow Songs") to Supertramp if John and Paul fronted the band instead of Roger and Rick ("Delivering Maybes"). Despite the pressure and strain of two major-label record deals, Sloan's members retained their childhood bonds ("Friendship") and optimism ("Don't You Believe a Word"). Throughout this extended look in the mirror, Sloan managed to write songs about maintaining sanity within a band scenario (the driving "Sensory Deprivation") and striving to make it in the face of the music industry's unwavering cynicism (the crunchy melodicism of "Losing California").
Recorded at Chemical Sound, Toronto, Canada in 1999.

Rolling Stone (1/20/00, p.59) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...ambitious; the songs meld one into the next, loosely telling the story of a certain Canadian band's rise to obscurity. It's an in joke wrapped in Union Jack colors..." Q (8/00, pp.105-6) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A small-time-band-goes-global 'concept' - very '70s....A curious, rocking delight." Melody Maker (9/19/00, p.51) - 4.5 stars out of 5 - "...Welcome to the most sumptuous guitar-pop this side of orgasm..." Between The Bridges Music Sloan Between The Bridges Songs Between The Bridges Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Even the songs I DON'T like are good How good is it? I like even the songs I DON'T Like. Huh? Well, it's like this: all four of 'em sing, which is cool because that means you get four lead vocalists on each Sloan album instead of the usual one -- but that's not so good if one of the four grates on your rock sensiblities. So, every few tracks, I find myself gritting my teeth to another otherwise excellent example of Nova Scotia's finest power pop. Yet that's okay in its own way, because this is, after all, power pop, not fully blown rock. Which isn't to say that the disc doesn't rock: it definitely DOES. Especially (although certainly not exclusively) the track called 'Losing Cailfornia': a GREAT guitar anthem. That one is so good that even if it were the ONLY good song it would nevertheless on its own make the whole dang album worthy of 3 stars. One last caveat: don't let the Monkees-esque opening track turn you off to the rest of the album: Between The Bridges's best rocking moments begin immediately thereafter, on track two. Now, to me, five stars means 'a gem', while four stars means 'worth owning'. And this is a four star album that comes awfully close to five. Therefore: Order and Enjoy. (And Go Nova Scotia!) Between The Bridges album
$6.39 When Jon Anderson rejoined Yes after DRAMA, he was inserting himself into an unusual situation. Keyboardist Geoff Downes and longtime guitarist Steve Howe had left to form Asia with prog rock vets John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music etc.) and Carl Palmer (ELP). Chris Squire and Alan White brought original Yes keysman Tony Kaye back and recruited vibrant young Australian guitarist/vocalist/composer Trevor Rabin. The quartet had already begun writing and recording, but Anderson was able to insert himself into the proceedings with such ease that the new combination sounds completely natural on 90125.
Mostly, the band was concerned ...

$8.49 This is part of Blue Note's Collector's Choice series. These are limited-edition pressings of a few thousand copies.
This LP has material from 1961 that for no real reason went unreleased until 1985. One song, "Three Coins in a Fountain," is from the same session that resulted in tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley's famous Workout session with guitarist Grant Green, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The other five numbers -- three obscure Mobley originals, plus "I Should Care" and "Hello Young Lovers" -- are from the previously unheard ...

$10.15 "LET IT REIGN" is the album that took New Orleans by storm. Believed to be the future of New Orleans rap."LET IT REIGN" single handedly threw the Southern Dynasty into the major labels radar with little to no promotion. The first single from "LET IT REIGN" "COTTON FIELD" was thought of as new wave hip-hop. Stated by many in the business, "here was the second coming of OUTKAST".....Considered the group that was not scared to be different; this album said it all. "LET IT REIGN" spoke about what was going on in New Orleans at the time. Dark with social commentary and a splash of that New Orleans party spirit.."LET IT REIGN" was ahead of its time during its release and it still holds true today.......Creeping from the secluded bayous of New Orleans Louisiana comes a group that has the ability to change the face of music, as we know it. Cooking up a brand of Southern-hip-hop-gumbo-gangsta-funk. Southern Dynasty has nothing ...
