| | Ray Davies Storyteller CD Ray Davies Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Sooner or later, it was bound to come down to this. Whether he just felt like striking out on his own, or, after all those years of sibling rivalry, decided to prove that he didn't need anybody else to get his songs across, Ray Davies has created a one-man show based on the Kinks repertoire. Essentially a live solo "Best Of The Kinks," THE STORYTELLER includes Kinks Klassiks (sorry) like "Victoria," "Tired of Waiting," and the semi-obscure gem "Autumn Almanac," along with such left-field entries as a cover of "That Old Black Magic," all interspersed with Davies anecdotes and witticisms. A must for Kinks Kompletists (sorry again).
Includes liner notes by Ray Davies.
Personnel: Ray Davies (vocals); Pete Mathison (guitar); Nick Payn (saxophone); Ben Wallers (piano); Tomas Penderson, Tucker Finlayson (double bass); Bobby Graham, Mick Avory (drums); Jody Linscott (percussion).

| Storyteller Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) An 'Unplugged' (Mostly) Autobiography First, as most Kink's fans would surmise from the tracklist, this is far from a 'greatest hits' album, and upon listening to this Ray Davies' project, not intended as such.
Unlike a lot of 'Storyteller' releases whose verbage consists of interesting snippets about each song, Mr. Davies utilizes the entire album as a canvas of songs that complement his music-life's recollection of memorable moments. (This is a re-release of a formerly out-of-print title, capturing Ray Davies' entire music/spoken-word show back in the late-90's.) Chronologically portrayed in a wonderfully entertaining manner starting from his adolescent years, this autobiography touches on family (including brother Dave) and the interesting people that composes his musical life. The revealing between-song banter is often so interesting, it seemed to be never unwarranted or deemed useless.
As noted in this review's title, the songs are predominantly acoustic-based renditions, performed in a recognizable form but slightly askew from their original, proving Mr. Davie's talents as a true Artist. With some titles not as recognizable as others and a few hits performed out of context from their full-length versions, each song works amazingly well towards the project's concept. All said and done, one walks away with a stronger sense of connection or fulfillment about Ray Davies. Yes, Mr. Davies could of simply done an unplugged hits session (another project?!) but took this concept and admirably turned it into a personal, more insightful musical autobiography.
Lastly, this live recording finds the musicianship and vocals in fine form, with whatever audience participation mixed to a perfect minimum. (The recording quality sounds as if Ray & co. were playing in your living room.) Highly recommended to fans of Ray Davies, The Kinks, 60's British Rock, and/or the Unplugged/Storyteller series. It's easy to imagine the confusion with which this manifesto for the defense of the status quo was received on its release in 1968. The world was in turmoil and the pose of the Street Fighting Man, rebellious and politically aware, was far sexier than the quaint homebody image the Kinks present here. The title track finds Ray Davies proudly declaring himself a preservationist of custard pies, vaudeville, and such comic book characters as Desperate Dan. However, these slices of suburban life have weathered a lot better than most of their contemporaries.
The Kinks were working in their own homey little world, as evidenced by songs such as the album's title track, "Picture Book," about family snapshot albums, and "All of My Friends Were There" whose very un-rebellious ...
| | Brian Wilson Smile CD (2004)
Storyteller songs
$16.19 Between 1967 and 2004, the SMILE sessions were pretty much the Dead Sea Scrolls of pop music. Well documented as head Beach Boy Brian Wilson's answer to the Beatles' masterpiece SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (which was itself largely an answer to the Beach Boys' PET SOUNDS), the tracks laid down in '67 for the projected SMILE album were the furthest afield anyone nominally operating under the pop/rock umbrella had ever ventured. Notoriously, intraband conflict (Mike Love, in particular, found the Wilson/Van Dyke Parks-penned conceptual work too far out) kept the record from being released. With several oceans' worth of water under the bridge, Wilson finally decided to finish the aborted project three-and-a-half decades later, adhering closely ...
