| | John Zorn Masada - Live At Tonic 1999 DVD (2004)
Jon Gibson: Criss X Cross Soundtrack
$24.25 The world of modern jazz would be a very different beast if it weren't for the emergence of John Zorn in the 1970s. Unafraid to incorporate a diverse range of styles into his music, Zorn had drawn on heavy metal, punk, classical, and a number of other influences to help drag the genre away from its traditional leanings. Masada are one of his many groups, with a line up completed by Greg Cohen, Dave Douglas, and Joey Baron. This show features Zorn and Masada performing in their native New York City, at a regular haunt for the band, Tonic, on the Lower East Side. The concert was filmed in the summer of 1999, and sees the band performing with their usual ...
| | Lake Biwa CD (2004)
Jon Gibson: Criss X Cross Soundtrack
$13.09 Personnel: Wadada Leo Smith (trumpet); Marc Ribot (guitar); Jennifer Choi (violin); Erik Friedlander (cello); John Zorn (alto saxophone); Marcus Rojas (tuba); Craig Taborn, Jamie Saft, Anthony Coleman, Yuko Fujiyama (piano); Gerald Cleaver, Kwaku Kwaakye Obeng, Susie Ibarra (drums). Audio Mixer: Jamie Saft. Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY. The four pieces that make up Wadada Leo Smith's Lake Biwa were composed between 2000 and 2004. They appear here for the first time. The musicians who perform these pieces include John Zorn; drummers Susie Ibarra, Gerald Cleaver, and Kwaku Kwaakye Obeng; pianists Craig Taborn, Jamie Saft, Anthony Coleman, and Yuko Fujiama; bassists John Lindberg and Wes Brown; violinist Jennifer Choi; cellist Erik Friedlander; guitarist Marc Ribot; and tuba player Marcus Rojas. This is quite a lineup, to say the least. Smith has been composing with his originally conceived and developed Ankhrasmation system of notation since the early '70s. The subdued title track is ethereal in places, yet utterly grounded by its sense of time and color. Smith's trumpet enters at midpoint and begins to stir the players to improvisation without ever losing sight of the melody and harmony in the piece. The longest work here is "Sanai's Enclosed Garden of the Truth." Smith uses spacious intervals to meticulously enter the theme, breaking it down a bit at a time as improvisers enter the fray. Zorn's solo here is exceptional; he rides along Friedlander's cello ...

Pain Killer: Bill Laswell (bass guitar); Hamid Drake, John Zorn, Mike Patton. Personnel: Mike Patton (vocals); John Zorn (saxophone); Hamid Drake (drums). Recording information: Tonic, New York, NY (09/06/2003). The "version" of Painkiller John Zorn assembled for this performance in his month-long 50th birthday celebration at Tonic included Bill Laswell from the original incarnation and drummer Hamid Drake as well as vocalist Mike Patton. While Patton is no Yamantaka Eye, Drake is far more compelling as a drummer than Mick Harris. The insert on the set correctly claims that this unit is something completely different. Not only does this band play a less free version of jazz, punk, and rock, it also plays free of many of the dub trappings it had engaged in an ...

| | David Byrne Knee Plays CD (2007) Bonus DVD
Jon Gibson: Criss X Cross Soundtrack
$15.65 Talking Heads fans sometimes have mixed reactions to David Byrne's solo work, complaining that it lacks the quirkiness and edge of classic Heads material. Those fans will have reason to take notice of the 2007 CD release of THE KNEE PLAYS, Byrne's score for Robert Wilson's opera THE CIVIL WARS. Originally recorded in 1985, THE KNEE PLAYS was Byrne's second solo outing, following THE CATHERINE WHEEL (an instrumental score for a dance production) and preceding his Latin experiments on REI MOMO. Its position in his discography means THE KNEE PLAYS still bears the residue of Byrne's Heads aesthetic, namely in the spirit of its genre-mixing eclecticism. New Orleans brass band sounds form the skeleton of Byrne's score, with gospel, classical, and avant stylings mixed in. (Byrne provides wry, spoken word recitations for several pieces in the manner of Heads track "Seen and Not Seen".) Inventive and engaging throughout, THE KNEE PLAYS is a worthy addition to the Heads/Byrne catalogue. The CD release appends eight bonus tracks. For David Byrne, this was one of the last times he would write in the hyperobjective style that marked his work with Talking Heads up through Remain in Light and some of Speaking in Tongues. The occasion, the chance to write interludes -- or "knee plays" -- for a large scale Robert Wilson opera, The Civil Wars, called on this kind of approach, Wilson being as detached as Byrne. ...
