Produced by Evans' former employer Ry Cooder, Blues for Thought often sounds like a Cooder album with a great singer. Better yet, Cooder has retained the services of some A-list studio cats, but manages to make them sound like drunken denizens of a Mississippi roadhouse. With the legendary Jim Keltner leading the way with his powerhouse thwacka-thwacka, and Cooder laying down his usual ultra-soulful licks, Evans and company groove mightily though a collection of first-rate material, including blues classics and Evans originals that sound like classics. Highlights are numerous, but one is the second song, "Hey Mama, Keep You Big Mouth Shut," which is almost assuredly the only version of a Bo Diddley tune to feature an oud. "That's the Way Love Turned Out for Me" is also a gem; a soul ballad featuring some absolutely gorgeous Cooder slide guitar, the tune allows Evans to show that he is much more than just a gruff blues shouter. Sonically, the record is a sweet audiophile pleasure, with lots of open space; natural reverb; and nasty, nasty guitar tones. Perhaps the only area in which Blues for Thought is lacking is the performance of Evans himself. Make no mistake, he's an amazingly powerful and sublimely tasteful singer, but he somehow comes off as a bit one-dimensional. He hits all the right moves, but, unlike the greatest blues, soul, and gospel singers, just doesn't seem to be especially emotionally invested in the tunes; it's fun, to be sure, but just not as gut-wrenching as it could be. That said, there is enough great musicianship and prime Ry Cooder guitar playing to make the disc a very worthwhile listen. ~ Pemberton Roach

Document's St. Louis Women, Vol. 2 follows the remaining chronologies of two little-known blues vocalists whose recordings might otherwise have continued to languish in obscurity. With 20 titles recorded between 1934 and 1937 for the Decca label, Alice Moore's worldliness and expressive voice compares well with that of Chicago's Lil Green, the post-WWII performer of songs like "Knockin' Myself Out" and "No Good Man." Alice Moore's music is as different as can be from smutty little party entertainments with naughty punch lines. Economic necessity led her to work as a prostitute during the mid-'20s. Her experiences in that challenging environment included unpleasant dealings with dishonest and misogynistic pimps, periodic nights in jail, humiliating courtroom appearances, a mandated visit to a streetwalker's clinic, and protracted prison time. This sobering context explains the captivating power of her vocal delivery, especially when she expresses her honest feelings about abusive, selfish men who sometimes become violent or even homicidal. She also sings of life as an underling in the racially delineated caste system that prevailed in the United States of America during the early- to mid-20th century and was still in evidence at the beginning of the 21st. Sometimes, one has to wonder whether the youth of the 1960s were really as open to new ideas and new sounds as their press would make you believe. Take the album at hand, In My Own Dream by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band -- their fourth official release (though two others have since gone into their discography at earlier points), it marked the point where the band really began to lose its audience, and all for reasons having nothing to do with the quality of their music. They'd gotten past the loss of Michael Bloomfield in early 1967, over which they'd surrendered some of their audience of guitar idolaters, with the engagingly titled (and guitar-focused) Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw. In My Own Dream had its great guitar moments, especially on "Just to Be With You," but throughout the album, Elvin Bishop's electric guitar shared the spotlight with the horn section of Gene Dinwiddle, David Sanborn, and Keith Johnson, who had signed on with the prior album and who were more out in front than ever. More to the point, this album represented a new version of the band being born, with shared lead vocals, with the leader himself only taking three of the seven songs, and bassist Bugsy Maugh singing lead on two songs, Bishop on one, and drummer Phillip Wilson taking one song. What's more, there was a widely shared spotlight for the players, and more of a jazz influence on this record than had ever been heard before from the group.
