Will Young was growing up. It had been three years since his unexpected win on the first season of Pop Idol and even at the time of his second album, Friday's Child, he had stated his intention to distance himself from the moniker of being a TV reality show winner, especially as the careers of such winners tended to be notoriously short. So there he was on the cover of his third album, Keep On, looking remarkably like the actor Todd Carty, who played the weatherbeaten character of Mark Fowler on BBC-TVs Eastenders. On Keep On, Young was mature enough to write (or at least co-write) most of the tracks, including the first two, "Keep On" and "Switch It On," both quite funky numbers. Then came the album's first ballad, "All Time Love," every bit as tuneful as "Anything Is Possible" or "Evergreen," his debut single and still the best-selling single of the 21st century. There was a mixture of styles on Keep On, from the salsa, holiday-inspired "Happiness" to the Justin Timberlake pastiche of "Ain't Such a Bad Place to Be," on which even the Indian-style intro worked well, to the ballads "Save Yourself," "Who Am I," and the final song, "Home," a haunting atmospheric track co-written by Nitin Sawhney. Keep On ran out of steam near the end with three tracks, "Madness," "All I Want," and "Think About It," all again co-written by Young but nothing more than album fillers, none of them having much of a melody. Three singles were released from Keep On, "Switch It On," "All Time Love," and "Who Am I," all of which either reached or got pretty near the Top Ten, and there were a few other tracks that would have made great singles, too. Altogether an excellent pop album from an artist who was maturing very nicely as the years went by. ~ Sharon Mawer

| | Simply Red Simplified CD (2005)
Keep On music CDs
$12.59 The UK pop/soul act Simply Red maintained a fairly low profile in the United States during the first few years of the 21st century, but that changed with the 2005 release of SIMPLIFIED. Issued on the Verve Forecast imprint, the album presents vocalist Mick Hucknall and company easing into new arrangements of their most well-known songs, including "Holding Back the Years," which gets a gentle, flamenco-inflected ...
| | Ari Gold Transport Systems CD (2007)
Keep On songs
$13.29 How many openly gay pop artists are there on the scene who actually come out early in their careers -- and not wait for the obligatory Behind the Music episode or sit-down with Oprah Winfrey several years down the road? Not many, and that's certainly what makes Ari Gold stand out from the pack. Gold specializes in R&B-electro-dance sounds that are a pleasant surprise given the fact that the music is laid-back and not of the hyper variety, as evidenced throughout his 2007 release, Transport Systems. And unlike quite a few similarly styled artists who simply revisit the same old subject matter in their lyrics, Gold's lyrics run the gamut from gay relationships ("Good Relationship") to human rights ("Human") and even drug addiction ("Feeding the Fire"). That said, none of the music is particularly revolutionary here; it's just pleasant dance-pop that comes off like a more mature Backstreet Boys at times -- "Where the Music Takes You," "Mr. Mistress," etc. But Gold certainly deserves credit for tackling lyrical subjects usually not linked with dance-pop, which he boldly does throughout Transport Systems. ~ Greg Prato

| | Them Crooked Vultures CD (2009)
Keep On album
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. If Them Crooked Vultures brings to mind Homme's projects more than Grohl's or Jones', it's largely due to his role as lead vocalist and how guitar can push a rhythm section as powerful as this to the side, dominating with its grinding riffs and solos. Homme's predilection for precision does reign supreme -- when the group stretches out, even wallowing in the murk on "Interlude with Ludes," there's the sense that, like a great improv troupe, the trio freaked out then retained the best moments, trimming away the indulgence and experiments, leaving behind intrinsically, grippingly musical hard rock, where power is ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Keep On CD music
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. It's an affirming story, but that's all it would be if Cash didn't sing her heart out here. The opener, a version of Jimmie Rodgers' "Miss the Mississippi and You," is full of comfortable grace and sentiment, and Cash keeps that fine emotional tone throughout this set. Songs like the folk classic "500 Miles" feel at once both lovingly rendered and reborn for a new century in Cash's hands. There's also her fine rendering of Bob Dylan's "Girl from the North Country," a nice turn at Harlan Howard's "Heartaches by ...
| | Sneaker Pimps Splinter CD (1999) Bonus Tracks; Japan
Keep On music CDs
$39.09 The trip-hop sounds of Sneaker Pimps found a large audience as the genre exploded in the mid-1990s, and SPLINTER was a fine addition to their body of work.
Sneaker Pimps followed the debut success of Becoming X with the different, yet strangely familiar, Splinter. Kelli Dayton, whose haunting vocals made songs like "Spin Spin Sugar" and "6 Underground" so evocative, is no longer with the group. While this takes the listener ...
