This intriguing album contains essentially all of tenor saxophonist Johnny Sparrow's solo work, including sides he recorded with his group Johnny Sparrow & His Bows and Arrows between 1949 and 1955 for the Melford, National and Gotham record labels. Although he was essentially a trad jazz artist, Sparrow flirts dangerously close to bop on some of these cuts, and at other times he seems to be working in an instrumental jump blues direction, and he even hints at merging bop and R&B in a fascinating hybrid on the wonderful "Drumming Up the Works." Other highlights include the soothing "Sparrow's Flight" and the odd, discordant but fun "Serenade to Satchmo" (Sparrow played in Louis Armstrong's band for a time before departing to start his own recording career). It doesn't add up to a large legacy, but what's here shows a transitional musician who wasn't afraid to stretch jazz into some new places, and there's an obvious and endearing joy underlying the playing on all of these cuts. ~ Steve Leggett
For the first time, this CD offers the complete issued recordings of Johnny Sparrow, including his work for Melford (1949), National (1950) and Gotham (1952/53). In his 1955 book "The First Book of Jazz," poet Langston Hughes listed Johnny Sparrow's sole Johnny Sparrow 1949-1955 Songs | 1. | What's New? | |

1949-1955 album
$18.05 Born in Minden, LA, and raised in Houston, TX, Percy Mayfield came to Los Angeles in 1942 determined to succeed as a songwriter, and gradually developed into a nationally recognized recording artist. Four incredibly rare sides released on the GruVtone label in 1947 are presented here as a prologue to Mayfield's Supreme and Specialty recordings. "Jack, You Ain't Nowhere" is a swinging strut for unidentified sax and rhythm with vocal chorus and periodic bursts of gruff hollering. "Get Way Back" is particularly interesting, with Mayfield speaking (rather than singing) in an offhand manner slightly off-mike. This feels like a taproot of rap music. Also recorded in 1947, four sides issued on the Supreme label find Mayfield singing the blues backed by Monroe Tucker's orchestra. Jazz heads will thrill to hear Marshall Royal blowing his alto sax with this smoky little octet, alongside tough tenor Maxwell Davis, who followed the singer into the Specialty studios, participating in all of his 1950-1951 recordings. ...

| King Perry 1950-1954 CD (2005)
1949-1955 CD music
$18.05 Oliver King Perry ("King" was his given middle name) was born in the industrial boomtown of Gary, IN, in 1920. Precociously multi-instrumental from an early age, Perry was inspired to play alto saxophone after hearing Johnny Hodges featured with Duke Ellington's orchestra. He performed with the Steel City Melodians, studied music at West Virginia's Starr College, and formed his own little band in the early '40s, gigging at clubs throughout Detroit and Chicago. After joining a package tour with Dorothy Donegan, the King Cole Trio, and Scatman Crothers, King Perry's group found itself stranded in Los Angeles. When they started performing in the clubs to generate cash, it was "standing room only." Then Daniel O'Brien began recording their music and issuing it on his Melodisc label. This led to recording opportunities with United Artists, Excelsior, and De Luxe. Early King Perry records reveal a soulful, spirited saxophonist who sang his own unusual and often humorous lyrics. At its best, his sense of showmanship was striking and inventive. Perry kept up with changing ...
